Description & Analysis

In 1783, the year that the Treaty of Paris officially ended the American Revolution, an Annapolis, Maryland silversmith named John Chalmers struck silver threepence, sixpence and shillings. These coins clearly circulated in Colonial Maryland and examples are seen in a wide range of grades.

The initials “TS” on reverse dies used to strike Chalmers sixpence are for Thomas Sparrow, the engraver of that die and possibly all of the Chalmers coinage. Sparrow was also an engraver of Maryland paper money.

The tiny Chalmers threepence features two clasped hands on the obverse and a branch inside of a wreath on the reverse. Although not as common as the shillings struck by Chalmers, the threepence are more available than their sixpence counterparts.
