Description & Analysis

As a date the 1804 half cent is very common, with even a fair number of Mint State examples available to collectors. It also has the greatest number of die marriages of the Draped Bust Half Cent series, some 13 in all. These are divided among three major varieties: Crosslet 4 in date, Crosslet 4 with Spiked Chin and Plain 4. These are further divided by the fact that the wreath stems were omitted from a single, but very prolific, reverse die. The only rare marriages are Crosslet 4 varieties C-2 and C-4, both of which have the usual stems on the wreath.

Once again the number of half cents coined bearing the date 1804 depends upon which source is cited. In contrast to the 1,055,312 figure given above, Walter Breen arrived at a net mintage of 771,312+ after deducting what he believed were half cents coined during 1804 but dated 1803. The overall commonness of this date, however, lends support to the higher total.
