Description & Analysis

This very large mintage issue is common across all grades through MS 64. Gems are somewhat scarce, but they remain available to the advanced type or date collector.

Some 23 die marriages resulted from various combinations of 15 obverse dies and 20 reverses. One of the latter was a Large Letter die used to coin 1828 half dollars, as well. The U. S. Mint was not particular about the date each die carried, and it was not unusual for coins bearing one date to be struck before ones carrying an earlier date. In this instance, however, the 1830 coins appear to have come later and are fairly rare. The Large Letters O-114 brings a strong premium. The remaining die marriages are divided into ones have a Small 0 in the date (18) and a Large 0 (four). There is no premium attached to these date sizes, as both are fairly common.

The half dollars of 1830-33 are often seen poorly struck from quite worn dies. The original mint facility of 1792 was showing its age, and a new one was already under construction. This distraction seems to have affected the quality of the coins during these years, and locating a sharp 1830 half dollar from fresh dies can be quite challenging. The savvy buyer will hold out for such a coin and may obtain it without a significant premium, as the quality of strike is not a major factor in grading.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction. As such, NGC disclaims all warranties, express or implied, with respect to the information contained in the NGC Guides.
