Description & Analysis

The mintage of this coin type is merely a reconstruction, as no one can be certain when the Draped Bust type ended and the Capped Bust Half Dollar began. It's likely that the number coined of the new type is lower than shown in popular guides, based on the survival ratio of the two coin types.

The new portrait of Liberty and perched eagle are the work of German-American engraver John Reich. He was hired as Second Engraver to Robert Scot, but his superior talent over the elder man became immediately apparent. These same devices were quickly adapted to other denominations, though they always seemed to be in better proportion on the half dollar.

Four obverse dies were paired with three reverses to create the four known die marriages. Three feature Large Stars, while O-113 is the sole entry having Small Stars. Varieties O-111 and O-112 share a common reverse on which numeral 5 in the value was first punched inverted and then corrected. This error has come to be known as 50 over 20, since the underlying numeral appears at first glance to be a 2. O-111 is also notable for a progressive die break from Liberty's chin to bust, the latest die state being the scarce and popular "Bearded Goddess" (O-111b).

Mint State coins are scarce for this issue, but several gems and near gems have been certified. The remaining pieces are found across a broad range of grades. Due to the fact that half dollars were often stored as backing for bank notes, lightly worn coins are found in greater number than for the smaller denominations.
