Description & Analysis

Despite having a fairly low mintage for a 20th Century minor coin, this issue is common due to the typical hoarding that accompanies any first-year-of-issue type. Adding to the population of Mint State survivors are countless coins put aside by speculators in response to the revised reverse.

Type 1 1913 D nickels are common across all grades through MS 66. The severely eroded and deeply clashed dies so often seen with the Philadelphia coins are not as much of a problem with the Denver edition. In fact, examples from fresh dies are sometimes found with amazingly sharp strikes and make for better type coins overall.

A minor repunched mintmark variety is known for this issue. Examples are also found having the shallowest feather polished off of the die. These "2-feathers" die states are not recognized by NGC, as they are not true varieties.
