Description & Analysis

Unlike the currency strikes of 1849, the proofs of this date have a very small date that was utilized for the quarter eagle, as well.

A dozen or perhaps slightly over are known of the Original issue. These can vary from the established weight standard, and such pieces may have been Restrikes from the same dies used for Originals.

This variety is especially popular with collectors, due almost certainly to its dramatic contrast with the Large Date 1849 half cents.
