Description & Analysis

No quarter dollars were struck until the final months of 1916, as it was anticipating that the new Standing Liberty type would be ready far sooner than it was. When the demand for additional quarters forced production, the Philadelphia Mint struck a relatively modest number of coins compared to previous years. Though the usual number of Mint State coins, including gems, have survived, nice coins in the higher circulated grades are more scarce than these. Of course, the availability of MS coins puts a cap on the value of scarce XF and AU specimens.

Most 1916(P) Barber Quarters are poorly struck at the deepest cavities of the dies: The hair at Liberty's forehead and the eagle's left claw and arrow feathers.
