Description & Analysis

A nationwide economic recession during 1913-14 led to reduced coin production. A mintage of fewer than one million quarter dollars was quite unusual for the Philadelphia Mint, but the demand for additional pieces simply didn't exist. Like the low mintage half dollar of this year, 1913(P) quarters were hoarded from circulation during the 1930s-40s, by which time most were quite worn. This issue is nonetheless scarce in the higher circulated grades and in Mint State. This issue is notorious for being weakly struck in places, and even some certified gems are lacking detail at the eagle's left claw and the right side of the shield.
