The origin of the BEP is traced to an Act of Congress passed on February 25, 1862, 12 Stat. 345, authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to issue a new currency--United States notes. Signed to Law by President Lincoln. This law was the cornerstone authority for the operations of the engraving and printing division of the Treasury for many years,

However it was not until an Act of June 20, 1874, 18 Stat. 100, signed into Law by President Grant that the Congress first referred to this division as the `Bureau of Engraving and Printing.'

The establishment of the Appropriation Act of 1869 was signed by Ulysses S. Grant, but the BEP did not become the sole producer of US Currency until 1877 under the order of Rutherford B. Hayes.

The beginning of an establishment for the engraving and printing of U.S. currency can be traced as far back as August 29, 1862, to a single room in the basement of the Main Treasury Building where two men and four women separated and sealed by hand $1 and $2 U.S. notes which had been printed by private bank note companies. Today there are approximately 2,800 employees who work out of two buildings in Washington, D.C. and a facility in Fort Worth, Texas. Lincoln?????

Ummm... Andrew Jackson was not president in 1969. Andrew Johnson (Chris's answer) was the president.

I would like to mention, that on the official BEP website, www.moneyfactory.gov/upload/BEP_HISTORY.pdf the the article states that legislation dated and signed July 11, 1862 was the "enableing" legislation for what was to become BEP. There could actually be a few winners, as the beginnings of BEP could be interpreted a couple of ways.

I tend to think that actual government website, and the history posted there would be correct.

Respectfully,

I'm confused. Andrew Jackson was President from 1829 to 1837. In 1869 he had been dead for twenty-five years.

This particular question seems poorly worded. Congress in 1861 clearly passed legislation authorizing the entity that became the BEP. From the BEP's own web site web site we have:

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing began in a single room in the basement of the main Treasury Building on August 29, 1862. Prior to this, on July 17, 1861, Congress authorized the federal government to begin issuing paper money in an attempt to ensure that the currency was safe from counterfeiting during the Civil War.

I don't understand how the Bureau can claim it began operation seven years before it was established?

Congratulations Coinguy19!!! You are this week's winner. Don't forget to stop by Friday for this week's question.

But Andrew Jackson was president from 1829-37 and he died in 1845, so that can't be right!
