For modern series, NGC recognizes only those varieties listed in the Red Book and the Cherrypickers' Guide. This is done simply because these books are widely distributed and are of proven reliability. Exclusion of other variety references does not necessarily reflect negatively on their value, but they frequently pass out of print and are superseded by other books, while the Red Book and Cherrypickers' Guide are firmly established.
