The "coin list" was actually parts of Evan's book on the Mint and Curator McClure's index of coins in the Mint Cabinet. There are numerous requests for the list, and many people assumed the Mint bought and sold collector coins.

(The Evans book was sold at the Mint's exhibit at the Columbian Exposition, along with the half-dollar size medals. Here's another letter that might make the situation clearer.)
