I am new to all this and have inherited some coins.  I am trying to figure out what kind of error this is on the reverse of this coin?

It didn't leave the mint that way. It appears that someone soldered a mounting to the back to display the front as a piece of jewelry.

Somebody must have been using them in jewellery. On one of the other forums there is almost the same thing being questioned except it was an 1895 Barber.
