An attack of "Schrivener's palsy " cause the Philadelphia Mint's bookkeeper to offer his resignation - twice. It was rejected - twice.

This was a serious occupational hazard for Clerks and Computers and others who wrote a lot every day. Primitive medical knowledge was of little help, and the most common treatment was to stop writing. For a few that was possible, but for others it was either write or starve.
