1909 $5 Indian Head Half Eagle Coin- D or O??

2 posts in this topic

I can't quite make out if it's a D or an O. I know they differ greatly in value so was wondering if anyone has any insight? Should I submit it for grading? Help!

My father left me his gold coins when he passed away for the grandkids college.

Hello and Welcome!

I'm positive that what you have there is a 1909-D not an O.  There are many 1909-D's with a filled mint mark just like that but I've never seen a filled O mint mark on one of these.  Your coin also appears to be circulated as well.  As the 1909-D is the most common date in this series and your coin is circulated, I myself wouldn't send it off for grading as I do not feel that doing so would add very much to the value of the coin.

I hope that this helps!

Tom
