1857 Large Cent - Large or Small Date?

6 posts in this topic

Is this an example of a large or small date?  It is in old NGC holder without attribution, so I wonder how NGC accounts for it in the census that distinguishes between the two.

Small Date. You can always find answers to such questions at NGC's VarietyPlus website under the Resources menu.

Can you tell if your coin has ever been lacquered?

it has never been laquered unless someone did a super restoraton job that I can't detect. The coin is totally original. I bought it raw, and it has remained that way. The previous 1857 large cent I owned was the small date variety. I like to have an 1857 large cent and an 1857 half cent around as the last of their kind. Here is the coin that this one replaced. I sold this coin when I was dealer.
