What tones non-silver circulated coins? Ex. Roosevelt dime 2005 D

This dime has rather interesting toning for a non-silver coin. This dime was in some returned change.  How does a regular 2005 D Roosevelt dime get toned like this? Sunlight?

The active ingredient for toning should still be sulfur.  Sunlight can increase the speed of toning in that it increases the energy levels (heat if you will) that increase the speed of chemical reactions.
