Byzantine Coin

3 posts in this topic

After much research I finally found the coin that I had been told was a Roman coin but did not look right and I was right. Turns out to be a much later coin from the Byzantine Empire. How did this get mixed in with third century Roman coins is a good question. Turns out it is a Manuel I from 1180. Does anyone have an idea of value. It is worn but readable, and better than anything I have found so far?

That’s cool. I went through a Byzantine phase. Based on you description I’d guess $20-$30. But if it has a nice patina and decent detail, maybe more. If it’s been cleaned removing the patina most collectors would pass on it.
