Eisenhower 1976-D PL

28 posts in this topic

I had already posted this PL Eisenhower 1976-D Type 1 in another thread awhile ago; however, I wanted to share some photo's that Jason Poe "physics-fan3.14" took of the coin.  Great photo's Jason! I especially like the animated gif's.

Of note, PL's are very rare for Eisenhower dollars; with 1976-D being the only year/mint they have been discovered per NGC census in the entire series.  Only (3) Type 1's, and (1) Type 2 have the PL designation.

BELOW ARE JASON POE'S PHOTOGRAPHS- physics-fan3.14

Nice coin!  Congratulations!

The population has really increased for the series.  There was only 1 PL a year ago for the entire series listed in the NGC census, which sold for moon money on eBay a couple of years ago.    That brought a few more out of hiding, but the issue has still proven to be rare in a prooflike state.

This was a really fun coin to photograph, and I'm really glad that PA allowed me the opportunity to see it in hand. You guys might know that I have a thing for prooflike coins.....

Quick correction, as I'm sure you can surmise - this is the 1976D (Bicentennial) Ike.

Also, there is only one regular series Ike (1971D) graded PL by NGC, at 65 PL. The prooflike Ike is extremely rare!

This particular coin has a very strongly mirrored obverse. When I first saw it, I was stunned by its reflectivity. The reverse is a bit weaker, as I think you can see from the photos. The reverse still has significantly more reflectivity than a standard issue, however.

So, great coin PA, and thanks for letting me hold it for a few days!

PS. How do you guys like the animated GIFs? Its something I've been trying out, trying to capture the surfaces better. I'm still experimenting, but I'd like y'all's opinions.

Thanks for the correction on date Jason- I don't know why I had '74-D on the brain.  I amended post to reflect change.  Also, I missed the '71-D PL in Census...wow, I guess I better fire my secretary.  Oh, wait, I don't have one...need more coffee!

Also, no problem on viewing the coin Jason, and thanks again for the photo's.  Nice job!

Nice coin and nice photographs! Pocketart, are you going to send it in to NGC?

I'll probably just leave it in the original slab for now- maybe down the road send it to NGC.

Thanks all for comments on the IKE!

Thanks all for comments on the IKE!

NGC will not accept this as a crossover.  It will crack the coin out and grade it as a raw coin.  If it only comes back as a star and not a full PL designation, you will take a loss upon resale.  I'd enjoy it as is in the ANACS holder.  I actually like the older ANACS holders.

I found another thread and it looks like 2" clear reflection for PL

That 2" figure posted by Vickery is not an official answer from NGC. That poster is not an NGC representative - although in general, I think a lot of collectors agree that about 2" is the right answer.

oops, you are correct - the NGC grader responded with -> (but over 10 year old thread)

We use a consistent standard on all denominations and metals.

Well, I bought it, and I submitted it ;)

I'll trade a nice and shiny Sac dollar. It's a good deal. It's smaller,so it takes up less space and everyone knows gold color > silver color.

I can't believe it...I found another 1976-D Type 1 PL.  This one I'll roll the dice and send out to NGC.  I also picked up a Gem BU 1987-P Jefferson Nickel PL.  I'll try to get better photo's of that and post soon.

I thought the so-called "golden dollars' were real gold:tonofbricks:

They're like those kinder eggs, you pop them open and you might find some gold.
