1883-CC S$1 GSA (NGC) - GRADE REVEALED

14 posts in this topic

Here's another GSA dollar I picked up!

Pics shot with my iphone so not the greatest quality, bus surprisingly good quality for a phone camera :)

Several shots of each side for slightly different angles/lighting.

The coin is graded by NGC.

All comments and guesses appreciated! Thanks for looking

I will go 62 - 63 like your other one, and leaning more towards the 63

thanks.

i really feel that these 2 coins are on a way different grade levels.. i can't compare them and to me they're not even close in grade. but perhaps it's the poor quality of my phone-camera pics.

i will reveal the grade tomorrow

thanks again for all guesses!

I would grade it MS-64. There are too many small marks on the cheek to grade it any higher. There is also sort of the "micro scrape" on the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse that makes that side MS-64 too.

The 1883-CC is probably the most common Carson City dollar. I've seen some very conservative slab grading on this one. When I was dealer I had a couple of them that a perfectly clean cheek with no marks that still only got an MS-65.

The coin is graded NGC MS65.

[it is also designated PL, but I didn't expect anyone to guess that from my low quality iphone pics :) ]

The 83' is a common date in GSA, yes, but I think not as common as the 84'..

85% of the total mintage of 1884-CC dollars were encapsulated in GSA holders (or somewhere close to this figure). I think there were about quarter million more 1884-CC than 1883-CC in GSA holders.

Thanks all for playing!
