Diagnostics for 1893 Proof Morgan...

8 posts in this topic

I couldnt find anything online... other than PL and DMPL examples of this year are rather rare.

I have a 1893 Morgan graded VF35 by NGC that has nice reflective surfaces though they are obviously impaired.

The only difference I can see between this coin and other Morgans I have is that the denticles are much more squared and better struck when compared to MS examples I have.

Are there specific die markers for the 1893 proofs ? I am wondering if I have a very impaired proof....

Thanks in advance.

Updated: I cant post pics for several days... so thats no help. Sorry.

Date Position and reverse bow for starters

is it a near date? or a normal date? and is it slanted at all?

there are a series of polish lines inside the bow as well as the wing gap

and these areas are commonly polished so an exact match of the lines

would be needed to confirm the reverse die used for you coin.

Interesting and thank you guys... I dont think its a proof though.

It looks like the reverse is much sharper and could be from a proof die but the obverse is "mushy" and not as sharp.

Here are the photos from the seller... Is this common ? To use a one proof die married to a non-proof die ?

These are bad photos but the surfaces are still reflective.
