GOLD TONING?????

9 posts in this topic

What is making my 2000 S silver dimes have gold toning on them. It is showing up in the hair and neck area and also on the reverse? The coin was never gold plated. It should be to new of a coin for this to happen.

Should I keep it there or remove it from the holer? With gloves of course. Some of the Kennedy's have the same toning in these sets. Should I keep the sets together?

I started having the same problem, and I put some dessicant containers in the box with the sets, and it stopped the toning immediately. I think it was the moisture in the air getting to the coins. I believe the cardboard may also have contributed. These were all newer sets too, like 1999-2001, and I found the toning progressed more on the clad sets than the silver sets.
