Here's something fun! Match the grade to the coin!- Grades Revealed!

34 posts in this topic

Thought I would try something different besides the normal "Guess the grade". Like the title says, match the grade to the coin. Have fun!

Kenny, I used your suggestion and have uploaded the photos to Photobucket and have included links to the pictures.

Grades are AU58, MS63, MS64, MS61, MS64, MS63 and MS62.

Years are 1885, 1897, 1881-O, 1889, 1884-CC, 1880-S and 1902.

Coin #1:

I will work on larger pictures when I get home this evening. I did not realize they would come out that small and I didn't want to bog the thread down trying to load large images!

If I may make a suggestion: I would crop and upload individual coins to photobucket and then add links to the effect of "Coin #1," "Coin #2," etc. This way, we could view the coin's one at a time, and it wouldn't bog down the thread either.

Coin #1 (1881-S) MS62

Coin #2 (1902) MS64

Coin #3 (1884-CC) MS63

Coin #4 (1889) MS64

Coin #5 (1885) MS61

Coin #6 (1897) AU58

Coin #7 (1881-O) MS63

That was a lot tougher than I anticipated knowing how many of each grade there is. It is obvious I will never get a job as a grader. Can't wait to see where I guessed wrong...lol

Although I do trust wdrob. He's been fairly accurate in some of the opinions he has offered here and on other threads. Plus I've had some good business deals with him.

Just had to throw that out there Wdrob! Didn't want you to think I don't trust your judgements!

This is not the case at all. First, the grading services sometimes provide different grades upon resubmissions, if you are anything like me you found yourself changing grades to match the grade list provided, and we don't have the advantage of seeing the coins in hand.

This is certainly an interesting exercise.

For fun, here is how I would have graded them if I hadn't been given the matching key:

Coin 1: MS62

Coin 2: MS64 - The luster prevents a higher grade in my opinion.

Coin 3:MS63+

Coin 4: MS63

Coin 5: MS62

Coin 6: AU58

Coin 7: AU58 - There looks to be some potential friction in the fields which would preclude a MS grade.

My guess,

80-S 62

02 58

84 64

89 64

85 61

87 63

81 63

A very original presentation and quite enjoyable.

0 of 7 Carl! I think this has been very fun! I have been documenting everyone's jugdements of the coins and it is very interesting to see what other collectors see in a particular coin.

It gets easier the later you come in here and guess. To bad you couldn't have erased the previous guesses by other posters and just give the tally.

That went well. Looks like 2 out of 7 was about the average. That does not speak to highly of grading coins from pictures. But we all knew that going in.

There are limitations to grading, but the pictures were decent enough to grade from. I think the problem was with the being forced to assign X number of Y grade. When I ignored the key, I was 5/7, but with the key 2/7.
