A coin in a series that is so hard to find or needs a huge amount of money to buy that would prevent most people from completing the full set.

The 1802 half dime. I've been collecting the early half dimes (1792 to 1806) for over 35 years, and that one has got me stopped. The last one I saw had price tag of $139,000. :o

 

Estimates vary, but the total population is estimated to be 35 to 40 pieces. The finest known using "old time standards" are in EF-45.
