During what year were pennies made of steel instead of copper? Why were pennies being made of steel instead of copper?

The year was 1943. Thofficial line was copper was needed for war effort. But I belive that was all PR From War Dept. There was enough copper but they felt that every time we saw a steel cent we would be reminded of the war. CHRIS

due to a shortage of copper during the critical war year 1943, the Treasury Department resorted to the use of zinc coated steel

1943 was the year that pennies were made of steel vs. copper. The reason was that copper was in short supply for the WWII effort, while steel was more readily available.
