  1. I been spending between $20 and $150 per coin on this set. I paid a little more for a couple. I got the 44 D in a package deal when I bought a couple others. Im no hurry to upgrade it yet but its gonna drive me crazy if I dont one of these days knowing I can within my budget. I will definately have to take some lesser grades on the 32 d and s. My plans are eventually when I get to the coins in the 40s and a few of the 30s is putting back $50 or so out of each check till I save up $500 or so and try to get most of them in mint state if I can. But if I dont get to and have to settle for AU coins then I will be happy with those also. Been thinking about shopping around a bit and trying my hand at buying raw coins and submitting them myself. Ive learned alot over the past few years to learn what to watch for such as cleaned coins and lower and higher grades.
  2. I believe it is a type C. Looks like it to me. Im still learning on these.
  3. Put some pure acetone in a safe container and drop the coin in. Let it sit for a few hours or so. Then retrieve it and let it air dry. The acetone wont hurt the natural finish. Dont wipe with nothing. You can get pure acetone at hardware stores or home improvement stores such as Lowes.
  4. Thank you for the kind words my friend. Its been an honor to meet all the wonderful friends Ive met on here and to learn from the best of the best. I have great respect for all the members on here. Everyone has treated me wonderful. Finding this forum has been one of the greatest things Ive ever done. It is certainally been the best thing for my collection. Hopefully I will be able to pass some of the knowledge Ive been taught on here to others who are new in the hobby.
  5. Soon as I finish this silver set Im gonna expand to proofs and clad coins. Ill probably go from 65 on to 98. Also want to put some SMS sets together.
  6. Before I seen Coinbuf and Greenstang's answers the first thing I thought when I saw it was it was exposed to some sort of acid.
  7. Need a new Washington quarter set from 32 to 64 that dosent include the 1950 d/s and s/d. Those being varieties should be included in the variety set. They are the only varieties included in the set. Wish there was a set with no varieties at all included in it. It would make it easier for us who are on a budget to complete a set. Its already hard enough to get the regular key dates without having to purchase 2 very expensive varieties to complete the set. When there is a set with varieties that those 2 can easily be put into for the ones who do want to include them.
  8. I wish they wouldnt have included the 1950 d/s and s/d in this set. Wish they would have made a registry set for varieties to include those and a set with just regular dates and mm's. Those are gonna be very tough for me to get. Just as hard or harder than the 32 s and d. Wish they would change it and put those in a variety category. Or make another category without those. You would think that those being varieties they would be included in the variety section.
  9. Thank you my good friend. This set has definately become a learning experience. One thing I have learned is to slow down and be patient. Make sure you really want the coin instead of just filling a slot. Ive got a few I regret now. If theres anything new collectors can learn from this post it is that. There will always be a perfect coin come by that you need for sets such as this one. Have patience and wait and you will eventually come across it. Instead of trying to hurry and fill that spot with just whatever.
  10. Ive literally seen hundreds of them looking through change the past few years. Was the seller on Esty? Its loaded with crooks like that. We usually warn everyone to stay away from Esty. There are a few on Ebay to avoid also. Alot of good sellers on there to. Just gotta watch who you buy from. But Ive seen sellers online trying to sell pocket change for thousands of dollars and it only worth face value. Sadly there are an endless amount of crooks out there trying to take advantage of people. Usually when you try to google a coin the first thing that pops up is a listing of someone trying to sell a common quarter or something for $10,000 dollars. 9 times out of 10 its on a link to Esty.
  11. Here is a very good example of an old coin being ruined by cleaning. This one was cleaned some time back but it removed the luster and left a dull look to the coin. This is an example of many very old coins that have been ruined from cleaning. Once you do it they can never be reversed. This would have been a sweet coin too. Also I done an experiment with brasso and it completely removes the original sheen and destroys the coin. I was just experimenting on junk coins. If you do use anything use pure acetone. Just let it sit. Dont wipe at all and let the coin air dry.
  12. I like it JP. Hopfully one of these days I can get the chance to see you pick it.
  13. It sure looks good to me. More qualified people will be on here soon to confirm it or deny it. But I really think it is one myself. But Ive been wrong before. Nice find if it is. Did you check anywhere else to see if theres any more found to compare it to?
  14. Im slowly moving closer to finishing my set. Its been a tough one. Didnt know what I was getting into. Several coins in this set. I got one of those 5 star note books where I could record all my coins and sets in it. Helps me keep up with what I got or need. Also be handy for insurance purposes if they ever get stolen or anything. Im very happy to accomplish what I have got done. Its getting ready to really slow down. Getting closer to those dreaded key dates. I still got a couple to replace also. One is a 1944 D AU55. I can replace it at a reasonable price. Also a couple with ugly toning I bought when I first started. I was to impatient.
  15. Been needing this one for a long time. Got the winning bid on GC earlier. Soon as I find a 56D ill have them all from 53D to 64D completed. I got several earlier dates but theres several holes in between them all to fill.
  16. I found a W quarter a couple years ago and I had it in my pocket where my zippo lighter was. I remember over filling it a bit and fluid leaked in my pocket. It caused a chemical reaction and turned the quarter purple.
  17. The sets Im constructing consist of several different grades. I go after what seems pleasing to me at the time. The only place they are displayed is in the registry. But Im not really trying to compete and win. I know I havent a chance in this world of winning. I just do it to display my coins among all the others if anyone is ever interested in viewing them. I really enjoy viewing other peoples coins. It also gives me something to go by to assemble a set. Id like to have the highest grades possible but sometimes I gotta go with a lower grade. On our Franklins Id love to go FBL on them all but Ive found great coins without it. So Im not really concerned to much about it. But I do try to find them in it if possible. But ours range anywhere between MS63 to MS 65. Some FBL some not.
  18. Mine and my youngest sons most recent Franklin for our set we been working on together. PCGS MS65 1954 S
  19. Sure is a beauty. Very nice find. What gen holder is that? Sure looks like an old one. Ive not seen any like that one yet.
  20. Wish I could make it. Cant get off work long enough. Also wanna save up some money to spend.
