    Washingtons

    recently acquired set of 1932 - 1964 Washington Quarters. seller stated that set was "informally graded by an independent third party and ranges are from MS-60 to MS-65." although I doubt the '36-D is MS.
    here's some pics made with digital point n shoot, so forgive the quality. to be clear, each obverse is followed by same coin's reverse.
    considering grading. opinions (especially of Washington collectors) are welcome. be kind.

    Sold Out?

    Got an email from NGC that said..."A special NGC label is available for the limited-edition 10-coin 225th Anniversary Enhanced Uncirculated Coin Set released by the US Mint on August 1. The release, limited to 225,000 sets, was sold out within minutes."
    Then I went online and ordered 2 sets! What 's up with the fake news NGC?

    First Top 100 VAM

    1880 CC VAM-6 GSA Hoard
    Going to be able to add to my Carson City Morgan Dollars, 1878-1893, GSA Holders Only Set.
    Took a chance and bought in an online auction. Came in box which is in great shape and with certificate. Had to pay that dang BP. Oh well, I think it was worth it especially if coin comes back MS62 or better because it turns out be a be my first VAM. I hope I'm right.
    Thanks to VAM World, I was able to identify each attribute of the VAM-6 including the 8 repunched over 7 in date with the original 7 pinched low, CC with dot of metal in center of each C, and die scratches through M of AMERICA and bottom of eagle's right wing.
    This one going in for grading. I'll be posting images when it returns.

    I've experienced the woes of having a coin come back Details Graded, but seriously...
    WKF...I was intrigued by your article, but soon got kind of grossed out. Ear wax? Seriously? I hope I never get a coin that you had sent in for grading! NGC might need to come up with a new details description: Waxed, Ear.
    Hey man just kidding.
    As far as carrying a coin around in your pocket. Doesn't it seem that doing so would only cause more wear?
    Who out there would want a coin that was carried around in somebody's pocket before or after being rubbed with ear wax? Just sayin'.

    Mint Error Coins

    I found these Lincoln Cent coins with errors...
    I found some pennies kept in their own folder by my father. Didn't think much about them till my brother noticed the mint errors. I have a clipped planchet, off-center (this results in a missing L one one), and one with no apparent date and only the TY showing.
    I have never seen these before so I was wondering how collectible are they?

    GSA Hoard CC MSDs

    Grades were posted for a 1881 CC and 1883 CC. And the results came back...
    A nice MS 64 for the '81 and a MS61PL for the '83. A little disappointed on the numerical grade for the '83, but it is Proof-like so that's nice. My first.

    CC GSA Hoards

    I sent in a 1881 CC and 1883 CC, both GSA Hoard types...
    I won these recently as part of my quest to get the CC GSAs for my custom set.
    Since I decided I wanted the GSA CC Morgans to be part of my collection, I have won several ('78 MS63, '80M MS62 ,'82 MS63, '84 MS63, '85 MS63) and now have the '81 and '83 in for grading. Their not the best looking coins, but they'll add to my collection and score!
    At first, I wasn't too impressed with the '83, but after another look, I decided it was worth grading. The '83 just might be proof-like, I'm not sure. Not that experienced yet with proof and cameo coins. Hoping for a minimum of MS63.

    My Nicest Morgan..so far

    Just received a 1880 S MS66Star Morgan Silver that I won while "drinking and bidding."
    Even as I suffer buyer's remorse for possibly paying to much for the grade, it seems like it might have been worth it, at least from a visual perspective. The contrast and frosty surfaces are amazing. I can't believe how awesome the coin looks!
    As a novice collector, going for this grade once seemed unreasonable, but now that I have it in hand and can look at this coin, I'm happy to have it. So far this is the highest grade I own. Sure hope it ain't the last.

    Don't drink and bid!

    just saw a 1880 S MS65 go for over $900
    It was on an online auction. I found this auction site when I started collecting and now frequently watch, bid, and win some coins offered during various auctions.
    Today, this auction had several higher graded Morgans so I tossed out some bids on some NGC-graded MSDs (1880 S and 1881 S).
    Then, as I watched, the 1880S MS65 with a green CAC sticker went for over nine bills. I was thinking...wtf?
    I guess the beer and excitement of the auction took over because the next thing I knew I threw a stupid bid and won a 1880 S MS66* for more than I probably should have paid.
    I really like auctions, but need to be careful as drinking too much beer can seem to dampen logic (despite having the Grey Sheet) and cause one too spend to much money for a nice looking coin.

    Recently acquired set of 28 MSDs
    Took a big chance and won a 1878 - 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Year Set at auction. Obviously pretty much a common set of dates/mint marks, but I am banking on the 1893, 1894, and 1895 run being at least AU. They will be deinitely be added to my registry set once they are graded.
    Coins look great under magnification. Can't wait to send some in for grading. Kind of concerned about some of them being cleaned. Anybody tell me how to spot a cleaned coin?

    Carson City Morgans

    Grading Carson City GSA Hoard Morgans
    Over the last few months I have been trying to add to my registry set for One-per-Date MSDs. I focused on the CC GSA Hoards. I ended up getting the 1878, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1885 GSAs and a 1900 O/CC, PCGS-certified (see image attached).
    Today I sent the GSAs in for grading and variety designation. The 1884 is supposed to be a VAM 7 and the 1878 may be a VAM 2. The 1885 looks real good and I think will go at least 64. That would be nice. The others I hope to get at least 62. When I get them back, I will post the results and some photos.

    Why so many Sets?

    Checking out Registry Sets...
    I noticed that Loopy1 has over 6 pages of Registry Sets, many of which have only one coin. What the...?
    On the Registered Sets in Franklin Half Dollars, 1948-1963, Complete Set (Incl Varieties), Loopy1 has 16 positions out of 30. Ok, I get it, each set has different [grades] coins, but what's the point? Unless the plan is to build each into a complete set, looks like a complete waste of space.

    I bought a couple of folders of "uncirculated" Franklins and decided to build up a registry set, so I decided to send some in to NCG.
    I am a rookie when it comes to coin collecting so it comes as no suprise that I am not too familiar with how to grade. I bought a grading guide (The Official ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins) and proceeded to "grade" about 65 Franklins. I was a little disappointed in that not all of the coins were UNCs, but I took out the five nicest and sent them in to NGC.
    I received the results today and am somewhat pleased.
    Here's the tally...
    1948 estimated to be MS 63 FBL, came back MS 66 FBL (sweet!); 1949-D estimated to be MS 65 FBL, came back as 63 FBL (bummer);
    1951-D estimated to be MS 63 FBL, came back as OBV SPOT REMOVED (drag)
    (I didn't want details grading so I'm guessing it would be UNC Details - Improperly Cleaned);
    1951-S estimated to be MS 63 FBL, came back as MS 65, and
    1954 estimated to be MS 65 FBL, came back as MS 64.
    Thought I had Full Bell Lines on the '51-S and '54, though. And what a difference a couple of points makes for the 1949-D! Was really hoping for the MS 65. I also need to learn to identify signs of cleaning.
    Overall, I don't think I did too bad. Time to grade some more and send them in.

    Bought a Bugs Bunny today...
    it was my first variety, the 1955 FS-401 Die Clash. Popular, too, I guess; I thought I could use it in my competitive set. But it's not listed. Bummer. Does anybody know why?
    Just sent in five others to be graded. Be interested in seeing how my attempt at grading compares. Will be sending in five proofs next.
