I have no problem with the grading standards of either company.  I do prefer the NGC holder for purely aesthetic reasons, I just feel they highlight the coin better.  I am actually also quite fond of the current ANACS holder because the curved top allows for a brief description of the coin when looking at a holder full of coins.  Plus ANACS is the VAM collectors friend.

    Interesting coin. I like it.
It appears, at least to me without really studying it, that Wyon used elements from the Australian Type one and Two Sydney sovereigns to crate the obverse for this coin. The wreath, believed to be a local banksia for the type one (1855-56), and the hair bun from the type two (1857-1870) on the sovereign.
Just a a fleeting thought. I'd have to really compare them closely to make a judgement.

A very easy to understand explanation of a concept that always confuses non-collectors and newbies.  Nice Job, looking forward to your other efforts.

When I was active on this forum in the 2010-2012 timeframe, NGC allowed PCGS coins in their competitive sets while PCGS did not allow NGC slabs in their sets.  I always felt NGC was implying some kind of inferiority to PCGS by allowing PCGS coins in their competitive sets.  I am glad NGC changed their policy in that regard.  It feels like NGC has grown up and become confident in their marketplace standing.

Mokiechan reacted to Mohawk in PCGS. Paying For 25 Cent Quarters With A W!!!!!!!
Well, Mike, I think there's an easy answer to this problem......don't buy into the hype.  Say screw PCGS and screw the W quarters and just pursue coins you actually want to pursue and that make you happy when you pursue them.  That's what I've done.  I actually did get a W mint War in the Pacific quarter in change myself.  You know what I did with it?  I gave it to my mother in law because she really liked the design of the coin and it made her happy.  I'm just pursuing my ancients and ignoring all of the modern US Mint hype and I'm very happy doing so.

I started collecting in 1968, it was past the period when silver dimes, quarters, etc. could be easily found in circulation but it was a time when wheat cents all the way back to the teens were still findable in change.  Of course silver war nickels were also still in circulation. But all in all, I always felt like I missed the best era for collecting (the Forties and Fifties).  I look back in my 1968 Red Book and I see outstanding low prices on so many key coins but I also realize, they were still prohibitively expensive for a 10 year old collector.  So, as far as I am concerned, for coin collecting, for me, These Are The Good Old Days.

    Greetings Kerry,
I left NGC boards for about 6 years for reasons similar to yours.  I am glad to be back also.  Looking forward to your future journals.

I have not seen the set previously, but I will make it a point to visit in the next day or two.  Those 32 Quarters are spectacular.  You need to blog about your photographic methods, if you have not done so already.

Revenant, You are so right, reading through my old blogs can sometimes be quite embarrassing but can also remind me of  previous collecting tangents, interesting people I met along the way, and even thoughts and opinions long forgotten.   Incidentally, I did end up merging my ancient ancient account with my current.  I noticed I was far more passionate back then, now I almost feel like collecting is a job.  Probably not the best attitude.  (:

No presidents were on our coinage for the first 116 years of the Mint's history. Lincoln replaced the Indian on the cent in 1909. Washington showed up on the quarter in 1932, which was originally supposed to be a one-year commemorative issue but was adopted for good in 1934.
The guidance for coin design in the late 1800's / early 1900's was to issue a new design for each denomination at approximately 25 year intervals. Liberty and Buffalo nickels, Barber dimes, quarters and halves, Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters and Walking Liberty halves all roughly followed this practice, and made very collectible series with well-defined start and end points.  I think a total re-do on our coinage would be a good thing. As great as Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington were, 80+ years on the same coin is too much.

Wow.......political much?  I thought we weren't supposed to get political on here.  I think we could talk about potential changes to American coinage without promoting American Exceptionalism.  I'm reporting this one to the mods.

Thank You for sharing this post and so happy to hear that all is going well with Sam.  What a magical day at the Tastiest Place On Earth.  I think you may stimulate a run on Chuck E tokens, are they really just plastic?   And more importantly, what are you thinking they will grade at, when you submit them?

Very sorry to hear about your current finances.  It is truly a shame that something like Medicare for All is not available in this country.  Keep your chin up and maybe spend the time while unable to add significantly to your collection by increasing your knowledge so when you are able to return to buying, you will be an even better informed collector.  I hope all goes well with your Children, they truly are a blessing in our lives.

Mokiechan got a reaction from Jack Robinson11 in NGC TOO?
Hi Jack, Yes, NGC is omitting registration numbers as an acknowledgement that these are not real coins.  But, it would be very easy for someone to open the slab, and sell those coins for a nice profit.  I would especially worry about the Confederate Cent as it is very well made and the market for Confederate material is lucrative. My main point is that this material, condoned by NGC and the Smithsonian are just as dangerous, or even moreso, than the Carr material.  Regards, Mokie
