What a trip!! Any U.S. collectors still here?

Entry posted by Six Mile Rick · - 396 views

I have been looking the past week and thinking of maybe submitting a few coins. It actually took a while --- like 40 clicks just to shout out here. Obviously everything is not ready yet for direct connecting with this site format. I have seen a few world collectors that have managed to adhere to the new format. Just wondering if there are any U.S. collectors still hanging around before I renew my membership ???

Thanks ----- Rick

Hey Rick I'm Rick

im here but a newbi. Still learning my way around. I collect US coins some of this some of that. I started about a year and a half ago. I do it because I like it. But really for my grand daughters 8 and 12. They seem to like the coins. It's just things to leave behind for them when I go. Bonds don't have very good returns so I thought coins mite be the way to go. I have not figured out what I want to collect for sets so I buy and trade. Also sell some on ebay. Most what I have for the kids are graded. I do have lots of raw stuff I need to go thru to sell or have graded. Any way pleasure to meet you. Have a great day

I'm still here but have not figured out the "new, improved" journals. I tried to submit one a couple of months ago, spent an hour or so writing, formatting and correcting it, then hit "Submit" and it vanished into the ether.  Haven't wasted any more time on them, other than reading journals from the rare few that persisted until they found the magic key.

Hey Rick ------ Glad to meet ya!!!

Coins for your granddaughters is a fun and re memorable deal that they will never forget. It's not the value of the coins as it is the value of the memories and time with the grandchildren. A treasure they will hold forever in their life!! If you ever need a second opinion ---- give me a shout.

Hey Brother ----- I guess they now call media in the club ---- The NGC Challenge.  Nothing works like you expect it to so you need to work around it. Kinda like trying to get a MS67 out of a MS66 ----  Impossible --- lol

Sorry, world coin collector here... But still not just lost but also not happy with the "improvements"...

Meade --- Nothing against World Collectors  ---

Glad you joined the conversation. It is just so close to winter and I don't see things getting better around here. You would think that it would be so easy by now after 9 months of the transition to the new format. It's crazy and is actually the only reason I did not renew my membership for submissions. I spent $10K last year on submissions. This year I spent $0.

Hey Rick!

I'm still here and I definitely still sell US coins......and I have several US coins in my Custom Set project.  I more collect without regard to country and more with regard to "Does this coin have a bird or other dinosaur on it or does it not?"  Any country is fair game!

Here's the set to see what I'm talking about:

I hope you plan on sticking around! The place wouldn't be the same without you!
Good to hear from you again!

So do I, Rick.

I don't know what to say to those who have found it difficult to navigate this site, given what some might think is my own verbal excess here.

But the lack of activity here is worrying so I do hope you stick around . The more, the merrier!

I still hang around here and read every post even though my writing has not been as prolific of lately. There are several reasons for this. One, I like the old journal pages better than the new ones but to be fair, I had noticed the decline in participation before the transition to the new. Two, my own collecting interests have narrowed considerably giving me fewer topics to write about. For instance, I just finished selling off the bulk of my Morgans. While I won't be writing about my next new Morgan, I will at some point in the future summarize in a post my collecting experience with Morgan's. However, I am keeping my gem and Carson City Morgans. Three, I have been extremely busy at work and am a little stressed out the past 3 or 4 years. This has effectively caused me write less since all my time spent at home is chilling from work. The good news is I have six more years left to work before retiring. My problem is that I am too young to retire and too old to put up with it. Four, my focus going into this phase of my collecting life is to upgrade my type sets and buy new pieces for my custom sets. My custom sets give me the numismatic diversity I enjoy and my type sets have been my first numismatic love all along. This has led to a decline in buying that goes along with a decline in writing. What buying I do now is focused on quality rather than quantity. That said, it is likely that I will not be going off on any new wild goose chases. No more new sets or for that matter custom sets either. I will however, work on bringing quality to all my remaining sets. I will with great interest be following all the sets that are linked on these journal pages. I do enjoy and learn a lot from other people's sets. A few sentences ago I mentioned chilling, perusing other collector's sets is one of the ways I chill!

Hey Rick, et al.,

I'm still here too, but work and vacations have been taking most of my time. I'm almost done with the half dime set, and adding now and then to Walkers and Mercs. But I'm trying to decide what "classic" set to focus on next.

RMW, Gary, Alan, and Tom,

I guess we are all still here. Just hanging out in the shadows waiting for someone to turn on some lights. I have no plans to leave NGC but I  was thinking that I was only one in a handful that decided to stay around here. The posts seem to be down to 7 or 10 a month.

I have a few submissions that need sent in -- nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars including Commemorative proofs. I usually send in coins that other friends are building sets of. That eases the heavy costs of each 50 coin submission when other collectors purchase a few high graders. Guess I will just need to wait till winter and see what happens here in the club.

Thanks for all the swell replies!!!!

Rick

Hi Rick

i get the feeling that, with only a few exceptions ( take a bow Welsh Dragon and Rick and 7 Jaguars)  I'm talking to myself on this forum. Not many posts and not many hits. I don't know what the problem is but I'm a somewhat computer illiterate Boomer like I suspect most are on these pages, but have little difficulty navigating it. I would imagine that the so called improvements were made by more computer literate people who forgot who it would be using it. I don't know.

By the way it appears that wait times for world coin submissions are being stretched out even longer , 5 weeks for Standard and 10 for value pieces.

im beginning to wonder if NGC is going to get out of world coin grading, as wait times are now double what they were last year.

it could be that staff are having issues in the aftermath of the big storm and so are not available, but my last submission in the summer was also 8 1/2 weeks and that was before the storm hit. And also it could be that volume has increased substantially . I don't know the  cause, only the effect.

Still here Rick.....and I also have found it difficult to navigate and enter new journals since it all changed. Tried it out a few months back and had no luck. Had a hard time figuring out what I was doing wrong. So I kinda gave up posting....but still reading the journals. I did bust the top 50 though in modern comms!!

I do not understand why the program platform would not work properly unless you are using an old unsupported operating system. I have  zero problem with 2 clicks.

If the operating systems are not compatible then yup, 40 or more clicks. Yours may need an update.

I am still here but my Early Releases  aren't..these coins in the Collection Manager has lost their value. The price guide once had a value for these coins  and now it reads no price which dropped my total gains immensely.  Not only are the Journal's site is strange so is the  chats boards.

Rick you were the first to welcome me here when I started collecting back in 2009. I loved reading you journals.

I do not know if I will be sending my coins to be graded since NGC wont have a coin guide for Early Release and I will not know what values are for insurance purpose.

I thought I'd stop by, taking a break from my depression. But there's just  too much activity here, Still searching for that elusive Denver D-mint-mark Silver Eagle. Gonna go back to my nap, now.

Hey Rick,

You seem to add quite a bit to the discussion.  It'd be a shame if contributors like you stopped posting.

I am a small time dealer/hobbyist who has sent six or so bulk/prescreens to NGC.  I renewed this year although I am not terribly excited (like I was with my first two submissions).

My last submission, I sent 320 Jeffs for MS 66 screening.  Even though there were some really nice coins, none were graded higher than 66 and only 8 were graded 5FS (all 1943-D).  Needless to say, I did a little soul searching after that.  Recently, I sent some coins to ANACS for variety attribution and have been reviewing much of my collection for RPMs, DDR, etc.  I will likely make two or three more submissions to NGC this year and will then evaluate whether I will continue using this service.

Keep up the fine work!

Best regards,

Glenn

Glenn,

MS67 nickles are tough to get!! Heck the nickels are tough all the way around. I do full step and enjoy the varieties in any grade. Give me a shout when you get a nice submission completed!! :)

Howdy Rick,

Still checking the journals from time to time and adding to my Kennedy and Franklin sets. You were the first member to welcome me when I joined NGC back in 2010.

I see your still a great ambassador,

Happy Holidays,

Larry
