My 2009 SAE is here!!

It's a beauty! I was thinking of buying a roll of this year's SAEs and picking out the few that might bring back a 70 but I really don't trust my grading skills that much. I still can't tell the difference between a 69 and 70 and don't think I ever will. I have a couple of 08 eagles in 69 and 70 grades and putting them side by side and I can't tell the difference! Mayby later on in the year I will pick up a roll from a local dealer and give it a shot and see how I do. Here is the picture

My First Coins for '09

Upgraded a couple coins. Happy New Year to everybody out there! I hope everybody had a good holiday season. This is my first entry for the new year and I made my first purchases of the year and my first in about 3 months. I was updating my coin inventory last week and noticed that the modern commemorative values for most of my coins dropped a bit across the board. So I decided to do a bit looking about and see if I could upgrade a few of my coins and I found 2 goods deals. I purchased a 200

Silver American Eagles...Proof I started collecting these beautiful Eagles in 1999 and have been getting them ever since. I also received 3 coins from my dad...2 from the 80s and 1 from the 90s... after he passed away. I have had 14 of these graded by NGC and had some great luck with 8 of them coming back PF70UC. Not too bad considering I only purchased 1 proof SAE a year from the mint! The most impressive coin has to be the 2006 reverse proof eagle. Not just for the eagle, but for any c

Silver American Eagles...Mint State This collection I didn't start until this year and I only owned one of these eagles before 2008 and it was just by accident. It came with 2006 Anniversary Collection that I purchased because I wanted the reverse proof coin. But when I started going through my coins in the beginning of this year, I looked at the only Mint State Eagle I had and I went head over heels for it and made my first "intentional" MS purchase from the US Mint this year and never look

A great year of collecting! Modern Proof Commemoratives2008 was an awesome time for me collection! I went from a casual collector buying coins from the US Mint to being more serious about my coins...buying from different sources, educating myself about grading, joining the Collector's Society, and having coins professionally graded for the first time. This year I purchased 79 coins already slabbed and I have had 41 raw coins graded. I want to break this down into 3 seperate journal entries so I

No coin purchases in November

But I did sell some I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend! We had some family over for dinner and on Friday my brother and I took the ATVs out for a ride. The picture I enclosed is from Sardine Peak fire lookout station. It sits about 8100' in the Sierra Nevada Range...what I call my backyard!! The US Forest Service is going to rehab the old lookout and rent to campers. I am going have try it out one weekend when it's finished. Then on Saturday and Sunday...all the Christmas decorat

October in review

The coins I purchased in October October was a special month for me. I finished my collection of MS SAEs! I devoted alot of attention to these coins over the last 8 months and was very satisfied when I got the last coin of this series. All I have to do is keep up with the yearly additions when they are available from the Mint. These were the last of the SAEs that I bought in October: 1992 MS-69 1996 MS-69 2000 Millennium MS-69 The Millennium was the last one I received and I believe

COMPLETE!!

MS SAEs are done! Today I added the last SAE to my collection! It is the 2000 Millennium Silver Eagle. I have been working on these eagles this year and my goal was to have them completed before 2009. I did happen to get some Proof SAEs and modern commemoratives along the way but the MS was actually an obtainable goal. I was worried about the "08 with reverse of 07" when it was discovered but I was lucky enough to get in on the ground floor when they appeared and got an MS-70 at a great price.

ONE MORE TO GO!

Millennium SAE is the last I just put 2 more MS SAEs...1992 & 1996... into my registry and I only need 1 more to finish that baby up. The last few months I have been focused on these Eagles more then the rest of my collection. I did manage to add a couple modern comms during this time but it has been exclusively MS SAEs. These would of been my last coins but a Millennium SAE was lost by the USPS awhile back. I haven't been able to find one at a good price lately. The one that disappeared

September was a great month!

Additions to my collection. Boy, did I go crazy on the Silver Eagles in September. I did quite alot of OT at work and was able to pick up 9 coins, 8 of those were SAEs and 1 commemorative. I got an ungraded Proof 1995 50c Olympic coin. It has the baseball design and looks great. I am very happy with this coin. When I pick up a few more proofs, I will send them off to NGC and hopefully I will be able to get a 70 for 1 or 2 of them. The 8 SAEs are: 1990 MS-69 1994 MS-69 1998 MS-69 19

Going Postal on the U.S. Postal Service!

They lost 2 packages...back to back!! They sure have got me spun up the last couple weeks!! The first package had a 2000 Millenium SAE and the tracking number showed that the package was accepted, processed, and moved on....to where...nobody knows!! Good ol' Post office says its "gone and lost forever"! The good news was that it was insured and the seller refunded the purchased price and said he would handle the headache of dealing with the post office to get the money back. The second packa

My Silver Proof Set is here!

Got it today I got my 2008 Silver Proof Set today and they look great! I have been getting the annual proof sets since the 80's and I have a few of the 70's and 60's. These set are by far the largest collection of coins that I have and I always look foward to getting them twice a year to expand my hoard. Jeffrey

August in Review

My collection in August August was a slow month for my collection. I was on vacation for the first 2 weeks and when I got back I could only find 2 coins that really jumped out at me. The first was a 2005 SAE MS-69. This coin put me over the 50% mark on my MS collection for SAEs and my goal is to complete this collection by the end of the year. The other coin I got was the beautiful 1991-1995 W.W.II Silver Dollar commemorative. I got its companion...the 50c piece...awhile back and it's nice t

NGC made my day!!

A geat coin came back PF-70UC Recently I submitted 6 ungraded modern commemoratives that I purchased hoping that I can get lucky and get one or 2 that would come back a 70. I was very happy with the results. 5 came back PF-69UC and 1 came back PF-70UC. It was a 1992 Olympics 50c. I am very happy with this coin. There are only 1745 of them graded by NGC and only 278 received PF-70UC! The coin cost me only $11.50, including shipping, from an auction I won on Ebay and Numismedia prices it $212

Back from Vacation!

and coins coming back from NGC I just got back from spending 2 weeks at Trinity Lake. We did a week of camping and a week on a houseboat with jet skis. For those who are not familiar with the area, the lake is located in Northern California about a hour west of Redding/Lake Shasta area. The lake is as low as I have seen it in the last 3 decades. But we were still able to go to our favarite spot to park the houseboat and enjoy the water. There was still some smoke in the area from all the fires

Re: More Questions - No Answers Revisted!!

"Early Release" and "First Strike" are marketing ploys. "First Strike" and "Early Release" are nothing more then marketing ploys by NGC and PCGS. NGC was sued over First Strike and has settled the case and they no longer do it. It is posted on NGC's web site. The US Mint has stated that they do not number their coins as they are minted. For example...if they project 1 million proof SAE to be minted and sold, about 50% will already have been minted before they even go on sale the first of the y

July in Review

My coin purchases for July July was another good month for my collection. I was able to pick up 11 coins for my collection. 6 of the coins were SAEs and the other 5 were modern commemoratives. I have really been on a roll lately buying the Silver Eagles. I bought 5 of them graded MS-69 and 1 ungraded proof. 3 of the commemoratives are ungraded. I will be sending in the coins this month to NGC and I believe (and hope) that 2 of the commemoratives have a chance for 70s. This month I am looki

Working Quickly on the SAEs

I picked up 5 in the last few weeks. Since I have started collecting the MS SAE a couple months back, I have been lucky enough to pick up about 5 coins a month. Most of them are MS69 with a couple of MS70s to add a bit of flavor. I wish I started collecting these back when I started with the proofs. Both types of coins are incredible and I tip my hat to the Mint for starting such a wonderful series! Here is the latest Eagle I received today. Enjoy your collection and good luck with the gra

Tbird47 Enjoy Your Set!!

It's yours...have fun with it. Don't let anybody tell you different. Wether you use 69 or 70, it's your choice. Enjoy. I guess my Proof and MS SAE won't be a complete set when they are finished because most of them are 69s instead of 70s I have not heard of such stupid sh** in quite some time! Paul Kiraly owes you an apology...IMO.

1993-1997 Proof SAE

Expensive coins!! I have been trying to finish up my proof SAE collection and I have kinda ran into a "financial" wall. The 1993 tru 1997 are quite expensive in the PF69 and PF70 range. They usually price well above $100 starting at PF69. The raw coins are not cheap either. I was looking for a coin from any of the 5 years that I need for the last couple of weeks. I did finally get a 1996 for $60 which I thought was not too bad a deal. I should be getting it some time this week and I will sen

Re...EXPRESS SERVICE....THERES NOTHING EXPRESS ABOUT IT...CAN WE GET A DISCOUNT????

My experience I have submitted to NGC 8 times this year. Even though I use the "Modern" tier and not the "Express", my turn around times are hit and miss. It's says 12 days but some are quicker and some are longer. I guess it depends on the work load they have. I was dumb enough once to submit when they had reps away at a convention and that order took about a month to get back once it showed "received". But so far I have no complaints and I have to say their customer service is outstanding o

I Have Gone SAE Crazy!!

Bought another one! I just purchased my 5th MS SAE this month!! Man, I can't believe how these things have gottin' under my skin. I wish I started with these wonderful Eagles way back when I started collecting the Proofs. I got a good start on the collection now and hopefully I can finish both the MS and Proof by the end of the year. I hope everybody enjoys these babies as much as I do! Jeffrey

Finally Scored some SAEs!!

A nice 2007 W MS-70 A couple weeks ago I talked about how hard of a time I was having trying to get a 2007 SAE at MS-70. Well, last week I scored a nice one off Ebay for $65. At the same time I also got a 2006 and 2002 at MS-69 for $25 each. The 2007 is one of the so called "Early Releases" from NGC It is the first one that I own. In my opinion they are just a "marketing gimmick/scam" from NGC since the Mint has flat out said they don't do early releases or first strikes! But it was the only
