NGC vs PCGS? (who’s the best?)

Greetings Collectors, Sitting here at the desk looking at a couple new arrivals. However  three of the four won’t be included in my set here because they’re in PCGS slabs. Still having trouble adjusting to the rule only NGC holders allowed. Only because one would like to be able to share ones entire graded collection. That’s only fair though. PCGS never allowed NGC coins at any time. Enough on that.   I will say for the record, imo, both NGC and PCGS are great accurate graders. In

Would you like a FREE Mercury Dime?

Not too many things for free out there, but this is one that is! Greetings Collectors, I've been selling some silver bars lately... unfortunately... But that's the reason I listed them. It's just always hard to part with something "tangible". I also have a few coins I am watching and kinda trying to build up the reserves before I start "pulling the trigger. Silver has been back and forth of late and any significant "pullbacks is a great buying opportunity. I have also been fine tuning a few

The "Old Green Holder" By PCGS Part-1 "Crack-Outs"

It is "every bit" of what it's cracked up to be. Or should I say what it's "cracked out" to be. But then again, be very careful. Greetings Collectors, Most of you that have been collecting coins for over 3 or 4 years have seen, owned or at least heard of slabbed coins in OGH or if you're not familiar with the OGH abbreviation, it stands for a coin that's in a holder that was used early on by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service). There are two generations of these OGH's with the 1st gener

The "Old Green Holder" By PCGS "History"

The fascination and demand, rightly or wrongly is what it is. And actually seems to be growing. This second journal post stops "mid-stream" because of the length, so please read part three which is the final part coming later today or Saturday. Thank you in advance for reading this. This has always been a very important topic for all serious collectors, and one that I'm sure will continue to be. I know it is for me. Greetings Collectors, The debate between who is the better grader in all of

Will the times ever be perfect?

Greetings Collectors,    Answer... not in our lifetime. Yet we can always strive to make things better. And learn from history. i was born in 1954. A great year to be into coin collecting. Just not old enough then to buy any great coins at great prices. Yet. (would like to have loaded up on proof coinage from 1950-1953. Or maybe crawled to every big bank in and around Philadelphia  a year later at age one, to load up on rolls of Lincoln cents of 1955) i just glanced at my first re

COMPLETED SILVER BAR COLLECTION

I'm ready to move back to coins in a big way! Greetings Collectors, It's been a while since I posted a journal here and while there are some of you who probably wished I was gone for good, I'm back. I want to thank those of you who have stayed in contact & you are aware of the issues that have been keeping me very busy. For those of you that don't know... For the most part it has been the health of my dad. Actually he's my step dad but he and I have been alot closer than my real fathe

PCGS "Old Green Holder" Info...

There are some real "gems" still out there... Greetings Collectors, I have been very busy of late with my business and of course my favorite hobby and have been meaning to post a "tidbit" of information on the very first series of holders from PCGS AKA "Old Green Holders". When I started collecting in the mid 1960's there were no such thing as grading companies. Everyone was pretty much at the mercy of whoever he or she was dealing with. I took a long break from coins at the completion of

Is PCGS "Better" Than NGC, Value Wise??

I don't necessarily think that's the case. But there are many that do. You have to know the coin series in question and YOU HAVE TO look at the darn coin itself. And you have to study it closely, and more than once. Maybe more than twice or three times. Greetings Collectors, I have pondered this assumption that is held by many in our hobby. From the little guy just starting out, right on up to the real "big boys" many, whether they are in the know, or not, swear by PCGS. In fact I've known

ALEXANDER WESTERFALL COLLECTION

Two of the "top five" of favorites in my collection... Greetings Collectors, And fellow "silver lovers". I went to the bank today to drop off some Kennedy halves and decided to pick up a couple of my silver bars to bring home and "play with". (does anyone else have a problem like this?) Everything stays locked up and out of reach so it's only seldom that I get to spend any time doing such as this. I had just picked up the "ultra scarce" 20.41 ounce bar at auction from Alexander Westerfall Sm

Old Green Holders... Smaller Rattler Slabs vs Regular Size OGH Slabs?

To me these two types of slabbed coins along with the old NGC "Fatty" Slabs are by far the best of the older slabs. And the oldest slabs from the oldest third party graders that go by the name... Greetings Again Collectors, Not sure why, but I'm in a writing mood that I have plotted out at least a couple dozen+ more journal topics to write on. And more seem to be popping up at the rate of several a day. So many in fact, I have gotten to the point that I am having to start a list, so that I d

Man Finds 8.2 LB Gold Nugget in Back Yard

This is something you really ought to check out if the yellow metal interests you in the least. It's a site to behold. Also just fyi, I have listed a couple other good sites that would be of interest to you all in my last couple posts. Greetings Collectors & Gold Lovers First of all this may be the shortest post in history for me. Just wanted to say that I know this is a "coin collecting" site, but I don't believe there is a person among you that would not be at all interested in someone

Couple of Speedbumps of Late...

Hello Collectors, I have been outta pocket for a bit as when you’re 65, you don’t do, look, or act like a “65” should. Feel like more of an au-55 at best. And I’m not talking about the age. Talking about the body grade.  I had a skateboard accident recently  and was prodded to take a trip to ER the next day by my girlfriend. Against my wishes of course. She actually witnessed the crash. Said I appeared to be airborne for minutes. Like a typical stupid guy, I turned down her offer for a

SAVE "MUCHO" $$$ ON EBAY COIN PURCHASES!

Absolutely "EVERYONE" can save on not only your eBay coin purchases, but everything you buy on eBay. Along with many, many other items you buy elsewhere online!!! Greetings Collectors, In this economy, me trying to save money has almost gotten down to an "art". I have always been very frugal. I will still bend over to pick up a penny that's laying on the ground. If it's a quarter, I'll almost fight you for it. (not really) But you get my drift. A fellow collector here told me about a way I c

What is Better, NGC, PCGS or ANACS? or buying from The HSN?

In my opinion only two of the above are worth owning...& HSN is one place that should be exposed as to who & what they are... Greetings Collectors,   The argument continues as to which of the third party graders are the best? All three of the above have changed their slab's appearance, as the three have done several times before in the past, with PCGS having changed more times than the other two. But as I have said before in previous posts, always buy the coin and never just buy t

Proof Coinage from 1950-1970...Part one...

"Wow, what a long way the US Mint has come"... with silver proof half dollars, among other issues. Greetings Collectors, I have bought proof sets along with mint sets for many years. I just thought it was the thing to do, as in having "one of each" at least. Some of them are barely worth the issue price, others a bit more. Having said that, I can count the different denominations I have slabbed on way less than two hands. I have no "slabbed" proof halves going back earlier than 1954. The one

Those Of You That Really Care About Markets In General

You all should add this additional site to your favorites or bookmarks along with Wealthwire.com & Coinflation.com The name of this new one is broad-based and very informative and the name is "The Daily Reckoning". Greetings Collectors, From time to time I mention other investments that kinda go hand in hand with our hobby/investments of coin collecting. All of these sites I mention, have had in the past, and continue to have, very informative articles about general investing, silver &am

This is exactly the feeling I missed...

Greetings Collectors,    I missed the fellowship. All of you, and I are alike in many ways. Yet different. To explain, I’ll use surfing. The guys and girls I shared that hobby with and still do, are/is an entirely different atmosphere. You feel one way there and interact. At work you use another mode of interaction with those you grow close to. Your doctor etc... Here, this is, and always has had, that other air about it. I know I didn’t say that right, as it’s kinda hard to describe u

Proof Coinage of the mid 1950's

Many of you may already know this from the series of posts I wrote close to a year ago. It was a 4-part series & it had lots of interesting facts about this type coinage from this time period and why high grade proofs are so scarce in the period between 1950 through the 1960's. If this type coinage interests you in the least, it would definitely be worth your while to go back and read that series of posts. I myself learned a great deal just from writing it. Greetings Collectors, I did a

WILL THESE COINS "EVER" BE WORTH ANYTHING?

I was "caught up" in the frenzy like many of you,...but... Greetings Collectors, I can remember very clearly the year was 1999. The State Quarters were about to begin. I had been buying "mint products" for at least 10 years and not just one, but several of each. My "mindset" was I had to have 3 of everything so that my three children would each be able to have one after I was gone. I ended up waiting too long to buy the proof sets in both silver & clad, and they had "sold out" for that v

WHAT DOES 2011 HOLD FOR OUR COINS?

Higher prices and after that... even higher prices. Greetings Collectors, The dawn of a new year and a new decade will be a "double edged" sword. I have followed prices closely on several different popular series through the course of this year and have come to the somewhat disappointing conclusion that all of the lacking spots in my sets are becoming more and more expensive. I have watched dozens of worthy specimens be bid far in excess of what I was willing to pay based on past auctions of

TWO VERY GOOD MOVES

I bet ya know what ones gonna be... Greetings Collectors, I have been doing some "touch ups" on my Franklin Half Set #1 with descriptions and re-shooting a few photos. As most of you know, I'm a Franklin half fan (which is short for "fanatic" & that's exactly what I would call myself) and have numerous sets and well over 100 graded ones ranging from MS-63 FBL, right on up to several in 66 with the "full bell line designation. The reason for so many sets is that I find it hard to pass on

Annual Coin Show 1892-S "Half Eagle"

Each year at our annual show I have been able to find a gold coin I could use, and for a price that was right. The raw example below fits the bill on both counts and I feel very fortunate to have acquired it, and to have paid as little as I did for it. Greetings Collectors, I was going through my raw coins to find at least 5 examples I could send in using my free coupon for the 5 free submissions. I think I have a pretty nice group to submit thus-far. I have picked 5 gold coins and several m

I'M Not Sure What Makes 1ST Strikes So Valuable...But...

But past history shows they bring the "higher dollars". And facts are a good thing to deal in when it comes to our coins. Check out a couple facts in the journal here. I hope you will find it interesting. Greetings Collectors, It's really refreshing in this current age of scams and rip offs to continually have awesome transactions with those that just several weeks ago, I had no clue even existed. Buy Gold & Silver Now! (Really??)

REALLY! Believe it or not, this ride is far from over with. And if one were to break down the individual components, it's very plain to understand.Greetings Collectors,This will be the 4th time I've posted a journal with this title. But this time more than the other two postings I'm sure there are some dissenting persons out there in "numismatic land".My 1st post was on 3/19/09 and gold was $950. There were dissenters then which posted almost immediately after mine that this would not be a wise

"CRACK-OUTS" CAN BE VERY REWARDING, BUT...

But they also can be a Double Edged sword. Your odds are much better if you know the series in question very well. But that may not save you... Greetings Collectors,   I have been playing the crack out game for some 8-10 years now and have been overwhelmed with joy AND I have been so pissed, I swore that I would never ever do it again. To those of you beginning collectors, it is not a game I would advise gambling on. But if you are very alert to what grade a particular coin should have, a
