About this journal

All bullion coins are minted at West Point, NY.  The S mint mark is a scam to make people think they are getting something special, at double, or triple the going price of a real Silver Eagle. In effect, the "S" coin is a phony, and doesn't have a place in the Registry. "Minted at" coins fall into the same category. The label can say anything they want.....even the Sheboygan Mint!

NGC removed the other coins, this one has to go also.

I too laid out hundreds of dollars only to have them erased, such  as the "2000 Millennium" ASE. Another gem that we "had" to have.  They won't pay   those coins we now have to eat.

I'M OUTTA HERE !

I have held on too long. Hello everyone, Hopefully 2010 will be my last year of competing in the Registry. I have had fun, and met a lot of nice friends. My sets are as good as I am going to make them. It is time to liquidate and persue other venues. I will hold one Sac proof set, a Prezzie proof, and my Proof Silver Eagles. My MS Eagle set, and the New Zealand Pennies will stay also. Everything else will go.....hopefully. It's been a blast, and a challenge, to get as far as I have. A ne

4 OUT OF 5 IS NOT GOOD!

At least the strapless penny was right. Hello everyone! It all came to pass. If you've followed my last two weeks of journals, you,ll be right on top of this. My KM13-A NZ, 1d Penny, is now just a plain 1945 penny. That's two they blew. I sent either a PL or PF, 1945, to NCS for fingerprint removal. They did a great job. It does look nice, however, it's got a purple slab.....yup. It's polished. Gee, my eyes are playing tricks on me. I guess I have to send all my proofs back to be relabel

MY FIRST 70 OF THE NEW YEAR

I guess it takes a miracle? Hello everyone! I just received my first 70 of the year. It's the 2010 $15 Canada Lunar Lotus, Year of the Tiger. It is absolutely gorgeous. I checked it out and it is flawless for such a high mintage strike. It's number 10507 of 19888. The RCM has craftsmanship that is unequaled. Their coins show Canadian imagination and beauty. Their subject diversification and commemorative dedication makes them a great choice for collectors. Unlike the US, stuck on eagles a

One's a loser! Hi all, I know there's a place to guess the grade, but I want the average members to participate. One of these pennies is a loser. You tell me? Thanks

WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?

and you doubt an NCG grade! Hello everyone! I just got this nice 1965 NZ penny back from PCGS. I sent 4 in the OGP. Three graded as MS64, and this. I'll leave it to the experts. I personally think they blew this one!

IMAGING DAY

Here's what they look like? Hi everyone! A few slabs(appropriately named)came back today. I imaged the QEII, New Zealand pennies, and they are looking quite good. The 1945 NZ George VI looks good, even though it lost the"British flan", KM-13A, pedigree. They must have hit delete on that line of the label. It's now in a slot though. I won't argue the grade. SECURITY? - WHAT SECURITY?

There is no such thing........believe me Hello all!   The Holiday season is back. W.K.F. has a point. Everyone wants to have something nice. A few would go as far as trying to steal it. I am fortunate to only have a mere $60-$70K in my collection. My friends all know I have it (and where). My collection represents a major percentage of my net worth. If I were to lose it I'd be devastated. The coins in my small collection, are for me, my son, and my friends to admire. They are somewha

EBAY?.........WHAT'S EBAY?

Oh yeah......I think I remember. Hello all, I love this place. I just remembered all the FVF, and listing fees, and the extra imaging fees, and not selling a thing unless I'd ship for free, and sell for ten cents on the dollar. I went to eBid and have had decent results........for free, forever. Well, back to the point. Ebay is a great place to waste your money listing all the purple tagged slabs from NCS/NGC. In less than two weeks the place is flooded with some very nice, and diverse coi

MISSING COIN?

I count 7. NGC counts 6? I count 7 coins in my Second Kennedy Anniversary set of half dollars. The score is as a number 1 set. The Grades are also. Collecting used to be fun, it has become less now that the US Mint has gone haywire. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO? - - - - - - - - - - NOT!!!

Check out the difference Hello everyone, I just checked out a set of 2009 Lincoln cents from NGC in PF69. I bought them from a dealer for less than $40.00. I just looked at them in our relatively rare sunlight. YUK! My last post has a scan, through the OGP, of a Canadian coin that is flawless. Flawless at 200X, that is. I am sending it in to be graded. I may send the spare to NGC. If they can do a 69 for a few severely die clashed, plated pot metal, US pennies, I guess a 70 for a silve

WE MUST BE CLOSING IN ON JUDGEMENT DAY?

I never thought about this side of the coin. Hello All, A few last minute emails from friends and competitors alike. Thanks for wishing me luck, and to those, and everyone, I wish you all the best this year. A few brought up a category in which we do not enter, yet still get graded. It's the Journals. I answered........What??? With all that went down this last year, I'd probably be last in consideration. I do believe some changes were made after all. Maybe the journals did their part?

2009 REGISTRY AWARDS

I did very well Hello everyone! Just a note of thanks to friends and foes alike. Here's to the people that made my sets what they are. Some won an award......some didn't. I will try to maintain the standards of collecting and improve in 2010. Thanks to Sam,Todd,Don,and Rene for input and support. Dean too....sorry! Thanks to NGC for doing this, and recognizing Society members for their achievements last year. My certificates made me realize how lucky I really am to be a part of this.

BUY A CHEAP SCANNER!

In my opinion,it's the best for less. Hi all! If I wasn't on W.K.F's iggy list I could offer an option. A few of us, on limited budgets, had the same imaging problems. I personally bought a Epson, Perfection V300 Photo, scanner. I got it(new)on eBay for $74.49 shipping included. It isn't like a pro's studio camera, but I am happy with it. Installation is a snap and it will take some shots a Hasselblad never thought of. Another Society member has a Canon he got at a garage sale for $3.

AND YOU THINK YOU'LL BE FIRST - NOT!!!

I guess you cannot ever be sure of anything? Hello everyone! If you're planning to go to Illinois for the FDOI, 2010, Lincoln cents with the shield reverse. FORGET IT!!! A bag of 5000 is already out, rolled, and being found in circulation. You may have to go to Puerto Rico instead. That's where they have them. Ebay has them too(so I am told)! So much for mint security. Just wait until you see a few 2009 PF and MS Eagle pop up. I guess there truly is no honor among anyone......anymor

A Collector's Dilemma

How would this get graded? Hello everyone! Here is the answer to easing expenses. How do I submit it to NGC? May we never have to decide on this option! God Bless the USA!

IS NO NEWS REALLY GOOD NEWS?

First it is.......then it isn't. Hello everyone! Well it's another weekend at NCS and NGC for a few of my submissions. It seems they are either scheduled for evaluation or scheduled for grading. Last week one from NCS went to NGC, scheduled for grading. Later it was in quality control. This weekend it's back in "scheduled for grading" again? I guess the fresh ocean breezes will do wonders for them. I never really worried much about these coins until they took over a week to get to NGC.

SANTA GOT HERE EARLY!

I can melt all my Eagles now. Hello everyone! We all collect metals taken from the Earth. What is done with them is quite amazing. I've had platinum and gold. I never had a silver bar. I've had aluminum and tin cans. I have worked all year on a pre-decimal penny set from NZ. I chose NZ as no one was interested in a few lousy half silver,cupro-nickel, and copper coins. Ebay had a half page of New Zealand coins and they were extremely cheap. I guess my passion for these unimportant sets caught

IT DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE WEEKEND!

I hate to say "I told you so"............but Hi Everyone! A short note this time. In my post about imaging, I entered the lines directly from the NGC page with both coins numbered and labeled. I stated it wouldn't last long. It didn't. It is now a plain 1945, as predicted. "It's too tough to grade" is NGC's retort. If we can't grade it, we eliminate it. They've seen two of these KM13-A coins so far, and still no one has seen a difference? I have done MY homework. The first is now f

WHAT A WAY TO START THE WEEK

I know times are bad, but c'mon!!! Hello everyone! Well, to start things off, my mail lady left a note in the box Saturday morning. It said she missed me at home. She did? I was up at 06:00 and waited for her until noon. Zip, zilch, nothing, nada! She never showed. I have to wait until Monday morning! It was only a few commemorative coins for my sets from 2001-2003. They have never been opened, and they should get good grades. I got them and opened the package.........2 out of the

2010 PREZZIES ARE HERE!

I have some nice coins, but lousy imaging! Hi All! At least I tried and didn't obscure my set. My scanner is on vacation. It should be back today if I can get te error message to go bck to where it came from. My all-in-one did it, but what a lousy image for coins. Not to worry. I will somehow get up and running to get these beauties redone and looking better. I have my Canadians to image also.........whatta week this will be. Thanks to the powers that put my sets up front! Thanks

Top in grade

The first in PF 69, but still #1 Hi all, I just got my 1st 1987 Loon proofs back. So far they top the chart. This isn't the greatest, but they do look good! Only a PF 70 can beat them. I'll take that seeing as how it is so hard to get any Canadian issue graded as perfect. I have more Canadian coins at NGC, but I don't even have to hope for a 70. All 69s are just fine. I have enough "perfect" coins to add this year. I can live with my lovely Canadians. Thanks to everyone that told me

A "FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH" PIC

If I had your money, I could burn mine. Hello everyone. I finally came up with the answer to the silver shortage, and rising heating costs. I am not sure if it will catch, but it was an idea. We should all have a little money to burn.

50th Quarter in the ATB set

Is it Colorado? When the Mint and the Parks Department promise to give each school child a "new" coin for attending, it was supposed to be the Battle of Saratoga quarter. The plastic capsules o one little girl contained a Colorado Statehood quarter. A few dealers said it was the worst introduction they had ever been to. Everyone had to drive to the local Post Office for stamping. Another inconvenience. I believe someone should make good on the promise of the new "50th" coin. The Mint is defini
