About this journal

Friends,

As of first ---- 15 years ago or so we had a FRIENDS list available on our member home page.  A few years ago the FRIENDS were changed to FOLLOWERS by the NGC group.

Now there is not even a followers list on our home page.  Is this Followers list coming back?? Seems the club is moving more and more towards unsocial practices.

Use to be a member could post their journal from their private member page. Now they have to go to Chat Boards to do so. I don't mind it but I know that many members do not use the chat boards. Will there be a link later to post journals from the member page?

Proof Set Collecting

Not the usual graded but back to our beginnings. Friends, I started a new collection this year that has really grown far more than I expected. I started trading coins in January for mint sets and proof sets and obtained very many proof sets in mint packaging. Today I made a purchase from Bill who is selling out and going on road adventures in his motor home. In the small pile he had there was a 2013 proof set and a 2011 Silver proof set to add that I needed. I have acquired very many doubl

State Quarters

A roll searching week! Friends, I received a monster box of 50 mix date rolls pre 2004 from Stuartt last week. My investment will be $50 over value and the count of submission coins is averaging 2 per roll. I will be down to 10 rolls left this morning with a cool Alabama die break that supports Helen Keller's name like a plant growing off the arm of her chair. Another special coin is the Kentucky with a solid blue reverse, top grade and full luster (looks like a star designation may find this

More Points?

Juiced up the clad dimes. Wow, I looked this morning and my Roosevelt dime set got over 5000 points added without even purchasing anything. Thanks NGC!! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Working on my CLAD DIMES and Mint Sets

Slowly adding and raising the rank. Friends, As you know I send in submissions to add to my mint sets for 1970 to date. The dimes have been a challenge as it is sometimes very hard to tell that a Roosevelt is borderline FT and won't make the label. Another tough one is the nickel that looks to be full steps but also falls short of it's label. I will be sending in a group of both next month for dates 1980 to date and have high hopes for those. As I get better I send in less coins and have be

Last Eagles for the year

Too many Eagles this year Friends, As the year started there was a good feeling as I added a MS or PF eagle to the two sets. By the time that the mint offered the no mint mark Sanfrancisco coin I was frustrated. But having the full set I went for the coin anyway. The minting of the bullion without the mint mark just made no sence to me. And now here at the end of the year we have the 25th Aniv. set = a must have for collectors of these bullion COIN issues. I tried to order mine but that d

A Copper Weekend

Trade SILVER for Copper Friends,   This weekend was a different switch as of the regular. Thursday I went to a local coin shop to trade Silver coins for Coppers. He had mentioned before that he was wanting to rid of all his copper stash.   As he had a nice group of Indians and large cent pieces I figured it would be a fun task. I ended up getting 2 books of wheats, 1 book 1909 to date, 70 rolls of memorials, 50 rolls of wheats, 70 large cents, 50 indians, and a few hundred wheats and

Strange Findings

Could it be a setup die tool? Friends, I was doing some pics of my Lincolns of which the proofs were too dark and the business strike were too bright. They will all need a redo but in the task I found something cool on the reverse of the 1974-D. It seems to be a plate or tool with the number 22 in the center of it. Left on the die and compressed into the reverse before making this Lincoln. Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

coin shopping :)

Not for myself but for another collector. Friends, I had a couple morgans that were raw and offered them to yankeejose. He will be getting the one I did pics journal on yesterday. I took the time today and visited my friend that owns a silver and gold store. I checked out the morgans he had that were raw and below AU condition. Got a handful of Carson Cities--1878,1890,1891 to send pics to Yankee and see if he is interested in them. As I was there for around 4 hours we talked about everythi

NO CORPORATE COMPETITION SETS NEEDED

A corporation does not get to the top by being HONEST Friends, Yep I too have seen the light, being a carpenter and not having any work last year my set crashed. However the admiration I have for my Morgan Dollars keeps a small log in the fire for a full set that someday will be complete. If the Society talked NGC into splitting up Dealers sets and Collectors sets do you think the big dealers or fancy corporations would be honest and not set up a dummy account? They would put their sets in

50,000 State Quarters

Far more than I even imagined!!! Friends, It has been a while since my last submission. A few years ago I decided to build a modern set of State Quarters. Grabbing a large group of rolls I started the simple search to find MS67 coins in fresh mint rolls. I had been watching RollingCoins come up with so many whoppers for sale that I thought why not give it a try. My first submission was a tough lesson on the series with MS64 to MS66 grades with a couple MS67's. Good study on overall strik

State Quarter Submission

What a blast!! Friends, It took a year to get the grading funds up. I finally got the chance to send in all the nice quarters I saved for the state quarter set. With 86 MS quarters and 19 SMS quarters I am down to only 14 coins missing from my set "Rick's Keepers" to complete it. I was also pleased to help another set (P.C.) with additions to get very close to the NGC top rank. One more submission later on should achieve the goals for both sets, his and mine. Also helping (V.P.) as his s

Searching Rolls Again

Strange Find Hey Friends, While searching for more 05 to 2010 MS coins for mint sets I ran across a 2005P Buff Westward Journey nickel that had a strange circle cut in it. The rim is fine so it had to happen before the rim was rolled on it. Wonder if the platchet cutter made it and it stayed through the dye? Heritage or Teletrade ???? Re

Well the choice was made BY MY WIFE Friends; It was a week of mental breaking stress. I have a new job coming at $25 hour and my truck is broke down with no warranty. I still have an old blazer (HOBBY) with a $10K Drive-train. The job will start in around 2 weeks but I have been out of work for 5 months. So I still owe taxes and have 1 high credit card. We have done O-K living off of ungraded coin auctions and small side jobs. But I know the I_R_S will be beating on the door soon and I would l

Precious Metals

Are they crashing?? Wow I see that gold is going below $1600 an oz. tomorrow and silver is perching at $29.00. Did they find a few good mines or is the value of our dollar really worth something again?? Sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the bureaucracy involved to come to such conclusions. A visit to the Wizard

Wizard coin supply that is Friends, I have been busy lately slowly catching up on the slowness that winter causes in debt and less work. As I add jobs to my worksheets it looks like it will be time soon to send in another submission to satisfy my modern coin collecting insanity. A visit to Wizard and a order of 350 poly flips fit the bill but not without a few more additions. I needed the volume 2 cherry pickers guide and decided to add the Authoritative reference on Roosevelt dimes. I h

A couple Lincolns for my President set

I had to purchase 4 to fill 2 slots Friends, I have been searching for First Day presidents lately. I did not think that the set would be so much work to keep up when I traded for a rank 32 all first day issues. I have searched everywhere I can think of and finally came up on a 2010 Lincoln PCGS 4 coin set for sale. I don't really care about a holder but my wife has told me she does like the presidents pics on the PCGS so this purchase will go over smoothly with her (with a little extra sh

WHAT A PAIN!!

Focus or Tones I spent a bit of time trying once again to get the right picture to load for the 1957D MS66FBL. I could get a great focus with no color or a great toned pic with no focus. I kept trying until I at least had most of the color and the bell lines. To get the right angle for color and focus seems impossible!!! I was trying to get the right pic for Dimefreak but do not feel so successful. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below

One for -- Iowa Silver Baron Bammer

Just a pic that made me think of another collector. Brian, First off you really need to shorten your name. It took a whole line to write it out. I was adding pics for the state quarters I got graded in Jan. this weekend and one gave me that ol "Out West" thinking. Of course your sets came to mind so I posted this pic for a good view. Adding a few pics

Always adding coins keeps the camera guy busy Friends, As I add to my page eventually I need to catch up a little on pics so I don't get too far behind. Last week I added a few and today a 1965 NGC MS67FT. Not the best photography but at least a try. ENJOY---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. The Raw Purchases are adding up

I still need 60 coins (30 easy and 30 tough) Hey Friends, I have started a new set of morgans now with 2 nice 10 coin purchases. Trying to buy the high grade easy coins first and then go for MS or lower on the finals. Good picks grabbed a 1894-O MS64 last night for 150. The good part of starting over with my Morgan set is that I decided to venture into all MS dollar sets and will very slowly be adding new sets to my registry. I will get the raw coins graded after I have acquired 100 or more

ANOTHER PURCHASE TODAY

$5.22------in pennies, nickles, and dollars Yep, I will soon be the proud owner of a few more coins. I purchased some coins that will add three slots to my Type Set. As usual I like to buy more than 1 of each to start a different series or set. I may run out of room on the first page with this purchase on my home page. Don't be upset to check some of the earlier sets and see only 1 coin listed. It only takes 1 to start a set, but can you stop at 1? I have tried to save as much as I can "of

I got the" BLUES"

Like alway ---- Searching again!! Friends, I spent part of the week searching 1971 mint sets --- 18 of them and also looking for a variety in 18 Proof Ikes I got in a trade. Well as I thought,43 years after the sale of these Ikes I would not find a variety. One thing I surely got that they could not find on the 1971 proofs 43 years ago is "The Ike Blues". Enjoy, Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
