About this journal

Friends,

As of first ---- 15 years ago or so we had a FRIENDS list available on our member home page.  A few years ago the FRIENDS were changed to FOLLOWERS by the NGC group.

Now there is not even a followers list on our home page.  Is this Followers list coming back?? Seems the club is moving more and more towards unsocial practices.

Use to be a member could post their journal from their private member page. Now they have to go to Chat Boards to do so. I don't mind it but I know that many members do not use the chat boards. Will there be a link later to post journals from the member page?

A Rarity

Searching old rolls? Friends as we run through rolls and mint sets looking for the sweet taste of varieties sometimes I am overly surprised. I was on a variety check in the Lincoln variety club and a fellow collector said something about a DDO Kennedy he found. I jumped on the thread and offered my opinion also mentioning that I was searching for DDO's. A week later a dealer sent me a couple nice trip die obverse and a quad die obverse. --- So Cool!!! Here is a shoddy pic of the 1964-D Qu

A nice" WALK"

A great trade this week landed a sweet Walker!!! Friends I set aside a day for a 150 mile each way trip for a trade of Franklins for Walkers. I have wanted a nice Walker for my Type set for years and finally have a piece entered. An exceptionally well strike at a MS66* and a beauty to behold in tones. I just did a couple shots for this journal but will work on a better one for the future pic in the set. ENJOY---- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can b

A night out on the town and a family COIN CONVERSATION???

It's hard to argue with the wife and daughter (across the table) at the same time. Friends, Well Friday night started out great with a pleasant meal at the Outback. My son sitting next to me, wife and daughter across the table. After the meal we started talking about my dauters college next year and a vehicle and out of right field from across the table "UP CAME THE COINS". I have split the coins up if something were to happen to me. My son is to get the Commemoratives, daughter will get

No Submission Record Found

A Good Sign!! Well Friends, I decided to check my 1952 Proof set submission today. As NCS has it first and then will turn it over to NGC for encapsulation. There are no records showing that I had any submissions so that tells me that things are rolling along especially since I have had over 100 coins graded this year. I should get some imformation on this quest next week. Here's hoping for a STAR!!! Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be add

Buying RAW coins to fill holes in sets.

Where to get your values for bidding. Friends, Many dealers subscribe to grey sheet price lists for their monthly values on raw coins and sets. A great magazine that my wife got for me yesterday is great and will help to keep up with monthly values of most raw coins I purchase and sell. It is impossible to keep up with today's value using the red book which is actually outdated when it is released for publishing. March to April values on MS65 coins -- +.11, VF graded coins -- -.49. Modern Commemorative Half Dollars

Just what collectors were they intended for Friends, I have purchased and sold very many Modern Commemorative half dollars but never bought any mint wrapper sets. There are many sets built by us that are from already graded coins and I was surprised to get the mint package ones that came this weekend. For the collectors that build these sets I thought a pic of mint packaged sets would be interesting. Below is a pic of 4 Modern Commemorative half dollar coins in a mint wrapper that were int

Thinking of selling your SILVER or GOLD SCRAP soon.

Wait a couple more weeks. Friends and Society, I have looked into my Chrystal Ball lately. The one thing that came out strong was the rise in the value of SILVER and GOLD of course. It is not far off. Only two weeks so it won't hurt you to wait and hold onto your scrap precious metals if you were thinking of selling. You heard it from me. LATER----

TO SELL OR NOT

Get her graded ,,,or sell her Friends and society, Well I haven't been too journalistic lately due to other hobbies. I have been selling coins on the side to upgrade later. I sold a 1894-O graded by some off grading company (USCG) that was MS64, I figured it would hit AU50. I have thought quite a few times that I wished I got her graded before I sold her. Hopefully I will renew my subscription before I sell too many ungraded coins. Luckily for now I have been selling the 3 point Morgans

RAW ROOSEVELT

A pic before the trip in for grading. Friends, I did mention that I was doing a small submission this month. I have chosen the MS Roosevelt dimes for this shipment. I also finally filled out a submission for my 5 free graders which I used the 1949 toned mint set ( except for the quarter I sold to Jason). The free submission wasn't costly at only $30 for the total. The dimes submission is pricey but I think will be worth it in the end. I was starting to prep the shipping package and remember

NGC quick Turn Around

Quarter Submission was TOUGH!! Friends, I sent in a submission that was accepted on Monday and is already shipped and on it's way home. That sure was a fast turn around on NGC's part. My grades were O-K but really a grade shorter than I was hoping for. I did get 1 MS68PL and a group of 15 MS67s and 30 66s to start the new State Quarter set. I think there were around 5 PL coins and yes I will study them hard to see where the barrier is in the grade differences. I expect to do another submission

A Full Step I have set aside.

I wasn't too sure on this one Friends, I have a 1949 nickle that was pretty sharp in fact the steps even have a nice view to them. There are so many coins that I want to send in that I simply bypassed it. After reading Jim's journal I went and cropped the old pic. This is a 1949-D and probably a MS67 to boot. I wanted to see what she looks like here. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The Reverse of the 1986 $10 Gold Eagle

I couldn't resist showing the perfect reverse of this piece. Friends, As usual every obverse has the reverse pic showing up sooner or later. So here is a large pic of the reverse gold eagle for those of you that have not seen the artful piece yet. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Pics of your muscle cars PLEASE!!! Friends, I know this is a coin hobby club but recently # had the decision to sell coins or muscle cars to upgrade his 1879 mint set. Of course he was smart in the decision and kept the cars. David, I would like it if you would post a pic of your favorite car or two that you own and a list. It would be a COOL journal and others may like to see as well. Thanks----Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added b

Auction House

I finally decided to use a different option to sell these sets. Friends, I sent in quite a few submissions last year. Of course there are great coins and then plenty of lower grades when you submit them. I added to my sets as I got my returns and then added to the sets here on this page as well. With 2013 over and still so many coins left on this page I decided to try a auction house and see where I end up in value percentage in sales. I was waiting for some coin sales last year to be able

I realy need some time to redo pictures

A new shot of an old coin Friends, Well being a carpenter my hands have the ware of an old tree and the size of a Mack truck compared to this tiny camera. I really need a tripod but most of all I need to get good with inside lighting. My camera skills are by far great but efficient for me. I do have a shot of my 1921-D that was not taken by me and is the reason I know I need to get better with my photography. This shot is for Dan to right click and save to background if it loads here. A Silver Commemorative Search

I found more than I needed for sure!! Friends, I was interested in getting a few hard to find Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars. Well the box came open and the full load was surprisingly beautiful. Mint package after mint package full of sets that were Silver and Gold from the first set in 1983 to 2010. I grabbed a few Silver sets that I wanted just a little over melt and I can get some gold if someone is interested in grabbing a few. There was also a few Double Eagles graded MS61 in the

UNGRADED MINT SETS

RAW Collection in OVERDRIVE Friends, I have recently decided to collect the longest run I can do of uncirculated and proof mint sets still in packaging or holders, sets, whatever. The farther you go into the past--- The harder to obtain and then there are actually a few key years that are usually robbed of the coin that was important to the set. I will trade any graded coins on my Six Mile Rick page for some sets you may have purchased a while back but never added more, or never got around

Anyone planning a modern submission soon ?

I would like to match!! Friends, I have my new subscription and plan on knocking down this pile of modern era coins for NGC grading. I would like to hook up with a few that are doing the same. Surely the dates would be different --- being different mint sets and trades would be a great time!! If you are doing a 1970 to date submission this summer give me a shout and we will work a few trades out. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can b

REVERSE CANDY

Can't show off the obverse without showing the reverse. Here it is the reverse of the 1949-S MS66 or so. No it is not going to find a FT designation but another in the set will. Here's the pic guys. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

On A NEW MISSION

What are the chances of starting a NEW State Quarter Set??? Friends, I am in the middle of a crackdown on grading Mint State Quarters with VARIETIES!! As we only have a couple listed with most that were found not listed yet I need to find out how many it takes for variety grades to become authentic. Once we get that situated Stuart and I will find out how many varieties it takes to actually start a Full State Quarter Set--Proof,MS,SMS,including Varieties. I am already thinking that this will e

Soon to get the gears grinding again!!

My collecting motor has been down for a while now. Friends, Well I am soon to renew my NGC membership and start sending in more of those great coins I have been hoarding. It has been a rough winter cash wise but my work schedule is flowing once again. I did manage to do a few sales and trades with promissory notes while I was low on cash but have overcome the debts and now ready to start spending a little cash on new coin ventures. I hope to complete my sets 1965 to date and start back coll

1817 Bust Half Dollar

O-K Folks here is my latest puzzle Friends, I went to the Gold store to pick up a few gold pieces. I grabbed 2-XF $5 pieces = 1894 and 1900. I also got a XF $10 piece from 1882. Then I was handed a mystery. I will show you very soon a 1817 Bust half. This coin had something on it previous to minting. Check over top of the date and you will find the raised letters from a past coin running from under one side of the bust to under the other side. I have tried every angle but still can't read i
