Contest Update #3... another update..

Dont be thinking outside the box yet.... Cuz as of this morning they are still in the box. My submission was received by NGC on monday Feb 13. This morning I checked the status of my order. They are "Received". 21 calandar days into thier grading odessey (15 business days) and they have yet to see the light of day, let alone the lamp of a grader. So I am afraid that those who guessed early to mid March in my contest only have two chances of winning... slim (chance) and no (chance). Still not t

Open Holders

For all of the members who had questions on the open holder situation... I'm surprised that no one has posted a definitive answer to this question, but I will. If you seem to find excess plastic around the edges, this is normal, and should not be thought of as a defect, quality control ineptitude, or tampering. To fully understand this, one must first understand how sonic sealing works. When coins are sonically sealed, high pitched sonic vibrations are converted to heat, which in turn melt the

Grading Gift Certificates

A copy of the letter I sent to NGC. What do you think? Has NGC (and its affiliated companies) ever thought about prepaid coin grading, or grading gift certificates. With a discount given for multiple purchases, it would be a win win for all concerned. The giver knows the gift will be used and appreciated, the recipient gets 1 more more coins graded for thier collection and NGC gets the money upfront earning interest until the certificate is used. What a deal! In appreciation of this suggesti

Number one is great but number 3, 4 or 8 is better.

I am number one but my rank means more as 3 or 4 I too am a novice collector and new to this ranking system. I have been collecting coins for 10 years now and specialize in the off suit US series of Philippine coins. I find my sets ranked 3 and 4 in the series more fruitful than the chase for number one. In my series some coins are almost non existant in raw and slabbed slabbable availability. Granted they do exist, but at what cost or what trade. My coins include many NCS coins not inclu

Number 1 registery

So what to do As a new collector and new to the hobby. I was proud to get my number one set. I was involved in the hobby, as were others by the new issue coins. Do I believe that tmy sets are more precious than the person that got me involved? To answer that question I would have to exzammine his collection. "Gerald", has been involved in the hobby many more years and more knowledgable in the hobby than I am.He has not a single set ranked and not likeley to have, although he is more kno

Coin Holders Like Model Airplanes (OC II)

Easy way to tell if its the plastic or glue... On the NGC coins that I have purchased and submitted, I have had several with 'nibs'. At most I have had 6 locations where the sealer has left the nib, one at the top and bottom, and two on each side. I find that an x-acto knife works good to remove the excess plastic. One thing I take a look at, esp. with purchased coins, is the interstitial space between the two halves. If the coin is NGC sealed, the plastic looks the same throughout (barri

RE: Opened Containers II

Recently I received couple of holders like that. I think it is just sealant. I recently receive couple of holders that have some melted plastic hanging on the edges and some in corners. I do not know how the seal the holders but looks like melted plastic points. I try open one holder and I did have to serious damage to get the coin out. If somebody wants open MS68 Silver Eagle he must have a lot of time, patience and be crazy :-)

RE: Okay, I just can't help my self.

I don't believe I missed the history lesson or the journey you speak of! If the members of the chat boards will remember, I have made the same comments you made, but only on the chat boards in several posts. The journey you speak of is of utmost importance in coin collecting. Without it, these tiny pieces of metal we so eagerly track down would be just that, tiny pieces of metal with absolutely no signifance in our lives. However, each coin has a history, a purpose, a character and a perso

Opened Containers II

Has this coin holder been opened and re-sealed? Or, has the inside somehow slipped between the sides during sealing? I am not sure what to make of this Silver Eagle I recently purchased, it has several points around the body of the case that are definately seperated, and what seems like plastic, or glue, sticking out between. If the seriel number is punched in the system, it comes back as a 1996 MS 68 Eagle which is what the label says too. Has this coin been switched out ?? why would someone

RE: Registry Awards

I respect your opinion. However ... I'm not sure I agree with your statements, especially about working hard. I firmly believe that each person holding a #1 registry set should have a time limit in that slot. I am adamant that each one of us should be moved to a Champion's Hall of Fame, etc. after that time limit and we should be duly recognized for our accomplishment. I'm not there yet, but believe you me, if I ever am, I'll vacate quickly for the next guy to move in! I do agree with y

Open holders

Has anyone ever come across holders that have been resealed? Had to refund a buyer when he told me that the holder appeared to have been tampered with. Holder appeared to have either been cracked open or improperly sealed and someone tried to fix it with superglue. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

RE: Registry Awards

I have a few opinions about the registry number one ranking. I have 4 number one rankings and I am torn as to how to proceed with my collection. I would like to comment on 100caps journal entry. I now he is number 1 in 1866 mint set because I am number 2. Do I think he should withdraw his collection because he has been number 1? In my opinion, no. This doesn?t make me the real number 1. I am happy with that. I may never be number 1, but I don?t deserve the ranking. I will try hard to s

NEW ANACS ????????

NOT AS GOOD AS THE OLD ONE I am very disappointed in the NEW ANACS of Mr. Taylor. I sent in 5 coins to be graded economy (21 days) rcvd by them on the 3rd of Jan. around the 1st of Feb. I called to check and see how they were doing...thus started a period of no answers and lies, that is worse than another of the grading parties (unnamed) I was told that the coins were still in pri-grading on the 7th of Feb. and then received assurances (five times) that someone would check on them and call

Any help on 16th century French coins?

I have 2 ready for grading... One is a 1587 French Henry III 1/4 Ecu, and the other is 1588H Henry IIII 1/2 Franc, silver I believe, and in very good shape. Let's guesstamate that they are in XF condition. Any collectory know the possible value of these? I bought them at a flea market about a million years ago, both for $10.00, because the guy selling them didn't know what they were, or what they were worth....either did I, and still don't. Any help on value?

"LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE" DIME NOW HAS A HOME!!!

A quick peek at on-line inventory pays dividends. One evening last week, my "Better Half" informed me that it was time to empty all the waste baskets and take out the trash. As I dumped the bin in my office, I took a "Break", (afterall, dumping these wastebaskets is heavy work) and scanned a favorite dealer"s inventory on the PC. Now, I have been drooling over a nice 1844 SL Dime (MS-62) on his site for some time, but knew I wasn't going to bust the budget with a 5 figure purchase. So, a

What does he have for me today - part 2

Advice - 1893 P Morgan PCGS MS63 Well, went to the shop today, and wow - did he have a coin for me today. An 1893 P Morgan PCGS MS63. I know it is a low mintage key date Morgan - I have one, only it is an XF45 slabbed. My question is - should I pounce on this opportunity or should I pass? I was thinking of selling some duplicate CC dollars to come up with the money. Thoughts - please, advice.... thanks wayne

Speaking out in defense of NCG

NCG received 2/2, I received 2/27 I've been reading the journal articles about turnaround time and feel I should (at least this time) stand up for NCG. I sent 5 coins in to grade and NCG received them on February 2. I just received them back in the mail today, February 27. I used the Economy service tier, they say turnaround time is 21 days. Well, this group came back in 25 calendar days, and I'm extremely happy. I also sent some currency to get graded by PMG, and had good luck with them als

Contest Update #2

Only a couple of dozen people have guessed. Two weeks ago today, my latest submission to NGC arrived in sunny Florida for grading and encapsulation. I thought a contest would be fun to guess when I would receive the email telling me my coins are done and on the way home. We have all grumbled a little about the turnaround times. Some grumble to ourselves and a few are a bit more vocal. I have fallen into the latter and this time I wanted to have some fun and share it too. So far though, only
