I think I got the bargain of a lifetime

A "TOP POP" NGC 1963 MS67 cent with only 4 existing, and I got it for a steal. I was checking my eBay favorite searches when I noticed something way down at the bottom in one of the fixed price listings. It was a 1963 Cent graded by NGC as MS67RD. The "BUY IT NOW" price was $219.95. I knew I wanted one for my registry set, but I didn't have any idea what it was really worth so I got onto the Collector's Society website and checked the population report. It told me that there are only 4 exi

Body Bag

Art colorization Well, well, well. I received my 1931S Lincoln back from NGC in a body bag. Curious as this coin had a strong strike, full luster and virtually devoid of bag marks. They provide art colorization as the rationale. WTF this coin has uniform color (maroon) on the obverse and reverse. I contacted them and to please review this coin before returning it to me. I had checked the website for my status early in the morning and it was still in QC. AT 800am I find it has been finalized.

GOOD NEWS .....OR BAD?

AS THE PRICE OF SILVER AND GOLD CONTINUES ON THE INCREASE, HOW LONG BEFORE COINS START DISSAPPEARING FOR THERE MELT VALUE??? Now, I know that collectors are not going to have their high end coins melted down. But what about those who have a hoard of coins stashed away that were collected in a jar over the years. Or those who were handed down a cigar box of coins and have no idea that a rare/collectable coin may be included. I really get concerned when metal prices skyrocket. I just know that f

New Signature Set

21st Century Type Coins! OK, so the set is a little boring right now, I mean it only comprises six years worth of coinage. But if there can be 19th century and 20th century type sets why not start a 21st century set? I feel almost guilty leaving out the 1999 state quarters. My real dilemma is, should I include the 1st Lady gold coins when the presidential dollar coin series begins? Any thoughts on that?

Additions to my Wild West Set

What I really want for Christmas is... not my 2 front teeth. However, I would really like to be able to add graded currency to my Wild, Wild West set. I can think of 2 examples right off, one being the Indian Chief large size $5 silver certificate. The other is a large size $10 Legal Tender note that features a bison flanked by Lewis & Clark. Both of these notes would be such a great addition to my set. I certainly hope someone at NGC sees this journal entry and helps me out. I can only wi

Ike set complete

Ranked number 6 I finally have completed my Eisenhower Proof Registry Set. All coins in the set are PF69uc. While the set is currently ranked number 6, I will try to upgrade. This will be hard as I will need PF69uc* (Star) or a PF70. Those 70's are pretty spendy items. I wonder if I have any old, rich relatives that could leave me money in their will?? Just a thought. I have attached a link to my Ike's http://www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=167

And the hunt continues

Key date Morgan Dollar - waiting for me Went to my local dealer the other day. He was all smiles. Business is good for him. We chatted for a moment and then said, "I got something to show you." He came back with a NGC Slabbed 1894 S Morgan MS62 with some nice toning. I did not even ask how much. I said to him, "I'll take it." He put it away for me and I am paying it off. I should have it by the end of April. With silver climbing higher and higher I was almost tempted to empty his cases of a

Addiction Relapse

I had my addiction under control until recently, now my Liberty Gold Half Eagle collection has swelled to 20 examples. I have added some nice Liberty Half Eagles. This set has become my primary set of interest at this time. There are lots of coins in this set (over 200), many that I probably will have no chance of owning. But I am looking to keep getting the rarest ones I can afford. Gold is a good place to be right now! :^) 1886sLiber

Grading Frustrated Today

Got back 5 PQ+ coins from NGC today that I sent in for upgrades and nothing...Trying to upgrade a set but my coins are nicer than the higher graded coins I see at auction!!! I get a bit frustrated at times when I look to upgrade a 64 to a 65 or a 63 to a 64 or even a 66FB to a 67FB and find that my coins are superior in strike, luster and cleanness.I recently sent 5 coins away for an upgrade/{grade correction!!} and got them all back with the packing slip I sent them with, the only difference w

"Poor Man's Insanity" 100%

What Next? The acquisition of an 1895-S Morgan in XF40 completes my registry set of Morgan Dollars. Currently, the lowest ranked 100% set of Morgans at #36. This number is not too bad considering the fact that Morgan Dollars are the #1 collected set at over 550 registered. I?m in somewhat of a quandary as to my next numismatic adventure. If this set remains untouched, I know that this ranking will only slip further down the list as time passes. I don?t have the funds to ever climb

RE: Poor Man's Insanity

I have wondered if Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday or some other person carried one of my coins around! First, a thank you to MWit for the kind words. I'm really flattered that someone else thinks my Wild, Wild West Signature set is a neat idea. And I promise to get some more images for you, if you can just bear with me for a few more days. And I do understand your dilemma on the Morgan Dollar registry set. I'm doing one also, and I really don't know how I can afford some of the rarities. I realize

Re: "Poor Man's Insanity"

Need to Upgrade! MWit, has a great looking set! However, you have two sets just below you, that will be passing you soon! You need to upgrade where you can. One of my sets of Morgans was getting ready for the TOP 100, but has been pushed way back, I'can't focus like you. You have done a great job THANKS!
