NGC Grades Unique 2010 John Lennon Gold 5 Pound

Posted on 5/13/2014

NGC has certified a PF 69 Ultra Cameo gold striking of the Alderney 2010 John Lennon 5 Pound coin.

In 2010 the Royal Mint allowed the public to vote for a famous Briton to be featured on a coin as part of its “Great Britons” commemorative series, which was started in 2006. John Lennon was chosen with 92% of the votes. Only 5,000 silver pieces were struck. The Royal Mint also produced a unique gold version of the coin that was presented to the John Lennon Estate and received by Yoko Ono.

This unique coin was auctioned off for the Alder Hey charity’s Imagine Appeal to benefit the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, England. The coin was sold by Bonhams for £72,000 (US $121,500) in 2010. It has not been sold publicly since then, and in May 2014 it was submitted to NGC.

NGC has graded this unique modern rarity PF 69 Ultra Cameo.
