NGC-certified German Gold Rarities Shine in Künker Auction

The October sale featured numismatic treasures from different eras of German history.

Several spectacular German gold rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) stood out in the Künker Fall sale, which took place on October 1, 2021. The numismatic treasures date from the Middle Ages to the German Empire.

Realizing several times above its original estimate of €20,000 (about $23,100 USD), a Germany (circa 1640) Munster Gold Medal graded NGC MS 64 (lot 1983) sold for €159,900, or about $184,900 USD. This golden rarity is religiously themed with the coin’s obverse and reverse displaying scenes from Jesus’ infancy.

Meanwhile, a German 1873A Mecklenburg-Strelitz 10 Mark graded NGC MS 64+ (lot 6502), featuring Grand Duke Frederick William, realized €86,100 (about $99,400 USD), well over its estimate of €30,000 (about $35,000 USD). From 1860 until 1904, Frederick William ruled the territory, which consisted of two detached areas in northern Germany.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • a Bohemia 1636 Prague 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 63 (lot 5157) that realized €79,950 (about $92,400 USD)
  • a Germany (1703) GFN Nurnberg 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 62+ (lot 2023) that realized €73,800 (about $85,300 USD)
  • a German New Guinea 1895A 20 Mark graded NGC MS 64 (lot 6586) that realized €67,650 (about $78,200 USD)
  • a German New Guinea 1895A 10 Mark graded NGC MS 65 (lot 6585) that realized €59,040 (about $68,200 USD)
  • an Austria 1772-dated Salzburg Gold Hieronymus Colloredo graded NGC MS 62 (lot 5176) that realized €41,820 (about $48,300 USD)
  • a Germany 1610 Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 61 (lot 5248) that realized €31,980 (about $36,900 USD)
  • a Germany 1613 Mecklenburg-Schwerin 2 Taler graded NGC MS 62 (lot 5809) that realized €18,450 (about $21,300 USD)

All prices realized include the buyer's premium.
