Mark Salzberg: Dr. Don Kagin is the Best Choice for ANA President
Posted on 6/3/2021
Dear Fellow Numismatists:
![]() |
The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is this country’s preeminent coin collecting organization, serving a critical role in the hobby since 1891. By preserving and sharing the hobby’s history, bringing in new collectors, organizing trade shows and educating collectors and dealers, the ANA represents the past, present and future of numismatics.
As one of the few nonprofits that is focused on growing and improving the hobby, it is vital that the ANA’s mission be continued and expanded.
I believe that Dr. Don Kagin is the best person to further the ANA’s important mission. His credentials speak for themselves. He was first in the nation to achieve a bachelor’s degree in numismatics at Northwestern University and the first to receive a Doctorate of Numismatics from the Union Institute and University. His declared mission is to grow ANA membership and educational opportunities through vision, innovation and leadership.
An author of numerous papers and books — including the seminal “Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States,” published in 1981 — for more than 50 years, Kagin has consistently shown a commitment to sharing the hobby in innovative ways: from producing one-man educational shows to successfully lobbying Congress for the 2006 San Francisco Old Mint Centennial Commemorative coins, which raised $4.5 million to preserve the storied Old San Francisco Mint.
Besides cataloging, writing, lecturing and teaching numismatics, Kagin is a member of several numismatic clubs and organizations and has served on several academic, educational and numismatic boards, including eight years on the ANA board, most recently as Vice President. Currently Kagin serves as a board member of the National Coin & Bullion Association, which he co-founded, and the National Silver Dollar Roundtable.
Don and I have had healthy numismatic debates in the past, but I truly believe that he cares deeply about the hobby and the ANA. If elected, I am confident that he will provide critical leadership that maximizes the potential of the ANA and our hobby.
Please join me in voting for Dr. Don Kagin for ANA President.
Best wishes,
Mark Salzberg
