NGC-certified Rarities Offered at Gadoury Auction in Monaco

Magnificent ancient and vintage European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) will be offered November 15 and 16, 2019, in Monaco in an auction presented by Editions V. Gadoury. The auction includes Part 2 of a collection that originated from the possessions of a member of the royal House of Savoy.

The collection of numismatic rarities from the House of Savoy is 416 lots of coins and medals from the time of Amedeo II (1080-1103) to Victor Emmanuel III (1900-1946), the auction house says. The House of Savoy, or Casa Savoia in Italian, was founded in the Western Alps in 1003 and was the ruling dynasty of Italy from 1861 to 1946.

The Savoy piece with the highest estimate, 250,000 euros (about $275,000 USD), is a 1684 Italy 20 Scudi d’Oro graded NGC AU Details. During the 17^th century, such coins often were given as diplomatic gifts to other royals. Its obverse bears a depiction of Victor Amadeus II (1666-1732), who was named king of Sicily in 1713 but exchanged that title to become king of Sardinia. He also held the titles of marquis of Saluzzo, duke of Montferrrat, prince of Piedmont, and count of Aosta, Moriana and Nice.

A 1901 Italy 5 Lire from the Savoy holdings in amazing condition, graded NGC MS 63+, also has an estimate of 50,000 euros.

A Savoy 1757 Italy 5 Doppie graded NGC MS 61 has an estimate of 50,000 euros (about $55,000 USD).

Another Savoy piece, an 1831 Italy 80 Lire graded NGC AU 55, also has an estimate of 50,000 euros.

Outside the Savoy collection, one of the auction highlights is an 1871 Spain 100 Pesetas graded NGC AU Details, carrying a pre-auction estimate of 75,000 euros (roughly $83,000 USD).

Among the auction’s large offering of ancient coins is a Ptolemy 21-40 AD Gold Quinarius graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface. It has an estimate of 30,000 euros (about $33,000 USD).

Other significant NGC-certified coins offered in the Editions V. Gadoury auction include:

• A 1670 Canada 15 Solis graded NGC XF 45 with an estimate of 60,000 euros (about $66,000 USD).
• A 1913 Prova Italy 5 Lire graded NGC MS 60 Matte, a pattern issue with an estimate of 50,000 euros (about $55,000 USD).
• A 1687 England 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 with an estimate of 20,000 euros (about $22,000 USD).
• An 1858 Austria Gold Half Korona graded NGC MS 62 with an estimate of 15,000 euros (about $16,400 USD).

The auction includes a wide range of offerings, from Greek, Roman and Byzantine treasures, Canadian, European and world coins — even some from the West Indies.
