NGC-graded European Rarities Top November Monaco Auction

Posted on 12/3/2018

The Éditions Victor Gadoury auction featured two NGC-certified coins that sold for six figures.

Two NGC-Certified gold coins realized at least a quarter million dollars at a sale held by the auction house Éditions Victor Gadoury. The auction was held November 16 and 17 in Monaco.

The centerpiece of the auction was an extensive collection of coins and medals of the Casa Savoia (House of Savoy),an Italian royal dynasty. Additionally, there was a very large selection of gold coins ranging from ancient Aureus of Rome to more modern coins, primarily from France, Italy and Monaco.

The top price realized from the auction was this 1610 Italy - Savoy 10 Scudi d’ Oro, which was graded NGC MS 60. It realized 250,000 Euros ($280,000 USD), outpacing its starting price of 200,000 Euros. The coin, which is one of only three examples known, was struck in Turin using the same dies used to strike the silver Ducatone of the same year. The obverse features the high-collared bust of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, while the reverse bears a shield of 4-fold arms, with the arms of Savoy at center.

1910 100 Lire PROVA, graded NGC PF 66. Realized: 220,000 Euros ($250,000 USD)

Another major rarity from the collection realized 220,000 Euros ($250,000 USD): a 1910 PROVA Italy - Savoy 100 Lire. Due to a problem with the gold content of the 1910 100 Lire issue, only 2,013 examples were struck, and many of those were melted. This particular coin is actually a PROVA, or pattern issue, which makes it that much rarer and more desirable. The coin is in a remarkable state of preservation, as evidenced by the fact that it was graded NGC PF 66. It is currently the only coin of its type graded by NGC. The starting price for this spectacular piece was 150,000 Euros.
