Modern Chinese Varieties: 2001 Silver 50Y Snake

Posted on 2/14/2017

This is the 25th installment of our monthly column devoted to modern Chinese varieties.

This month's featured coin is a rectangular 5 oz silver lunar coin featuring the snake. Minted in Proof and dated 2001, these coins can be found with either a small “50”Y or large “50”Y on the reverse of the coin.

Here are photos of a 2001 S50Y Snake with the small “50” variety (Photos 1 & 2).

Both of these varieties share a common obverse (Photo 5).

Look for another interesting variety to be featured next month.
