Pieforts are specially produced pieces on double thick planchets. These pieces are intended for collecting and not for regular circulation. As with many coins with special mirrored surfaces, pieforts seem to be particularly prone to development of residues that can first obscure the original surfaces and with time and the correct environmental conditions, damage those surfaces.
This French silver piefort 10 Centimes coin of 1962 was submitted to have the unattractive residues removed from the original surfaces. The conservators at NCS were able to carefully remove the residues while not damaging the surface underneath with hairline scratches. This coin was able to grade very well with NGC following the professional conservation work.
