Improper storage develops many kinds of problems on the surfaces of the coins we enjoy. Some residues have an easily identified culprit while others, such as what we see on this 1834 Bust Half Dime do not have clear provenance. Not knowing the source of a residue can make conserving a coin slightly more difficult.
The conservators at NCS were able to determine the residues on this coin, though unattractive, could be removed safely. It is important to keep the surfaces of a coin of this era to remain authentic. After skillful residue removal, this over 150 year old slightly circulated coin was able to grade numerically with NGC.
