Vintage Latin American Rarity Certified by NGC Offered in Sedwick Auction

Posted on 4/28/2025

The rarity is among dozens of NGC-certified coins that are expected to realize five figures in the early May sale.

More than 650 rare coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in an upcoming Sedwick Numismatic Auctioneers sale that is focused on rarities from Latin America. Online bidding is already underway for Sedwick's six-session Auction 37: Treasure, World, US Coins and Paper Money, which will be held May 7-9, 2025.

The top NGC-certified highlight of the auction is a Costa Rica 1873 GW Gold 20 Pesos graded NGC UNC Details - Cleaned (Session 3, lot 1026), with an estimate of $35,000 to $70,000. This rare one-year type is considered a classic Latin American rarity with an estimated mintage of only 100 coins. Each of the coins were believed to be presented to Costa Rican President Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez's friends and other dignitaries. Today, fewer than 15 examples are known to exist, with only nine offered at auction in the last two decades, according to the auction house.
