Heritage Offers Toned GSA Morgan Dollars Certified by NGC
Posted on 9/13/2024
Rare GSA Toned Dollars certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and pedigreed to a notable collection are now available in Heritage Auctions’ Attractively Toned Morgan GSA Dollar Collection US Coins Showcase Auction on September 23, 2024.
Coins included in this auction are part of the Toneddollars Collection, which has enjoyed the spotlight in recent years in the NGC Registry. NGC displayed selections from this spectacular set, belonging to collector Jack Kelly (aka: “Toneddollars”), at the 2020 Florida United Numismatists Show.
Among the highlights of this auction is an 1879-CC Morgan Dollar graded NGC MS 65+ (lot 93014) and an 1881-CC Morgan Dollar graded NGC MS 67 (lot 93025). Each is pedigreed to the GSA Hoard, the name given to a cache of several million silver dollars that were held in the vaults of the US Treasury Department and later sold by the General Services Administration (GSA) from 1972 to 1980. The majority of these coins were Morgan Silver Dollars from the Carson City Mint.
Uncirculated silver dollars from the hoard were sold by the GSA in hard plastic holders (called “hard packs” by collectors). Coins deemed to be circulated were sold in flexible plastic holders (called “soft packs” by collectors). NGC grades both GSA hard packs and GSA soft packs, keeping the original holders intact and wrapping a distinctive blue band with the coin’s description and grade around the holder (for the hard packs) or encapsulating it in a flexible holder (for the soft packs).
Coins that are still encapsulated in the original GSA holders are extremely popular among collectors. Attractively toned coins have become highly sought after by many collectors, especially in recent years. Rainbow toning and crescent-shaped toning, which adorn a number of these coins, are especially desirable.
