NGC-certified French Rarity Expected to Sell for Six Figures in Heritage Sale

Posted on 7/29/2024

The mid-August auction also features an NGC-certified ancient coin with an estimate of more than $100,000.

Seldom-seen gold rarities linked to French King Louis XV and Roman Emperor Maximinus I are among hundreds of world and ancient coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered by Heritage Auctions. Bidding is already underway for the ANA World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction #3118, which will take place August 15-17, 2024.

The top NGC-certified coin in the sale is a France 1740A Gold Ecu graded NGC PF 62 and pedigreed to The Paramount Collection (lot 33119), with an estimate of $100,000 to $200,000. Featuring the bust of King Louis VX of France, this gold coin is extremely rare and coveted by collectors of European numismatics. Ascending the throne at only five years old after his father's death, Louis XV reigned over France for almost six decades from 1715 to 1774. According to the auction house, fewer than 10 of these coins are believed to exist today, and the NGC Census contains only three examples.

Another NGC highlight in the auction is a Roman Empire, Maximinus I AD 235-238 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch XF★, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface (lot 33077), with an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. This rarity was struck under Emperor Maximinus I, who ruled for only three years before he was murdered — the same fate as the four emperors before him. Only four examples of this coin have gone to auction in the last two decades, according to the auction house.
