Posted on 12/12/2023

The highly prized coin is the centerpiece of a January 2024 auction of the Peh Family Collection.

Some of the world's greatest English numismatic rarities are in the spotlight as an exciting group of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and pedigreed to the Peh Family Collection are offered at auction. The sale, presented by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, will be held January 30, 2024.

The auction's top lot is an England 1703 Vigo 5 Guineas also pedigreed to the Millennia Collection and graded NGC MS 61 PL (lot 1129). The 5 Guinea coins struck bearing the word VIGO are among the greatest rarities today in English numismatics; fewer than two dozen are known to exist. This one has an estimate of at least $300,000.

The coin bears the word VIGO under the bust of Queen Anne on the obverse, a reference to the Battle of Vigo Bay. An English and Dutch fleet engaged a French and Spanish naval force after learning that Spanish treasure ships were ‌in Vigo Bay in northwestern Spain. The English captured or destroyed all of the enemy ships and captured several thousand pounds of silver along with a mere 7½ pounds of gold.
