Posted on 11/28/2023
An impressive rarity with 5 kilograms of gold led the way as more than 500 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) were offered in a recent SINCONA auction focused on modern issues. SINCONA Auction 86 was held on October 24, 2023.
The auction's top highlight was a Great Britain 2019 5 Kilogram Gold £5,000 Una and the Lion graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 1845), which realized 600,000 CHF (about $672,000). This unique coin helped inaugurate a new series from The Royal Mint celebrating "The Great Engravers" and their work that has graced British coinage for centuries. The reverse shows the venerable "Una and the Lion" design by William Wyon that was first issued in 1839 on a 5 Sovereign coin honoring the young Queen Victoria.
The SINCONA British Collection is an extraordinary group of rarities that represent the history of English coinage over nearly 700 years, starting with King Edward III in the 14th century. Forty-six coins from the SINCONA British Collection have each realized prices surpassing $100,000 in five auctions held since November 2021.
