NGC Featured Registry Set: Canada
Posted on 9/13/2022
Collector Gold Beaver, specializing in modern Canadian coinage among other areas, only joined the NGC Registry in 2021, but has entered more than 2,700 coins in 369 sets to become the 7th-ranked overall member of the NGC Registry.
Originally from Ukraine but a resident of Canada, Gold Beaver has been collecting for 11 years. Though he collects modern Australian, Chinese and British gold coins, about two-thirds of his collection is made up of modern Canadian gold and silver coins. His ultimate goal is to reach 100% completion of every Elizabeth II era silver and gold set in the NGC Registry. No less than 47 of his 150+ Canadian sets hold the top ranking.
“RCM produces coins of outstanding artistry,” Gold Beaver wrote. “Their mint specialists are great! I suspect that RCM is #1 here globally.”
His favorite set is Peace Dollars, 2019-Date, Complete. He has one of two complete sets, his achievement being matched only by Registry stalwart Coin Maestro. The Peace Dollar series started in 2019 as a medal, with a female allegorical representation of Peace designed by retired RCM engraver Susan Taylor, and a reverse depicting Lady Liberty battling snakes by retired US Mint chief engraver John Mercanti.
Gold Beaver excitedly declares the obverse a “masterpiece.” The crown jewel of the set is the 1 kilo version of the medal with a massive diameter of 102.11mm. Struck with a reverse proof finish, only 325 were made. Denominated as coins starting in 2020, the coins are made each year in 1 oz silver and 1 oz gold in various finishes and occasionally other weights.
The Royal Canadian Mint produces commemorative coins in huge numbers but the issues often have tiny mintages of only a few hundred. Many of these coins simply disappear, Gold Beaver says. There are numerous coins that he has never even seen for sale, despite careful searching of many websites.
Another of Gold Beaver’s favorite sets is his complete set of 1 oz gold Maple Leafs. The coins have been minted in various finishes and unique special editions since 1983 and the set encompasses almost 60 coins. The series is so daunting that Gold Beaver’s nearest competitor sits at a completion rate of 16% with 10 coins.
Though Gold Beaver loves his adopted country of Canada and most of its many coins, there are some coins he does not. Though he is compelled to obtain them for his collection, coins with special features like embedded jewels or statuette-like relief are not to his taste.
“Coins must be coins, but not brooches or pancakes,” he wrote humorously.
