Description and Analysis
1873 OPEN 3 1C MS
Description & Analysis
The Open 3 variety of the 1873 cent is noticeably more common, though the exact number coined is unknown. From observations of the known survivors, Q. David Bowers estimated that about 9 million of this year's 11,676,500 cents carried the Open 3 date. While more available than its Closed 3 brother, this issue remains scarce in Mint State.
As seen in the obverse photo above, the numeral 3 was reduced by trimming down the two opposing balls to create greater separation. It may have been that the same date logotype was trimmed by hand, but this is mere speculation.
